He isn't a total asshole as he help you during the journey, but that mostly to make sure you don't fall behind. His team is competently made so he can cover all base. He is the standard of what makes a Rival. 10/10.

The Asshole rival for the purpose of hating him. His entire gimmick is that he really really hates Team Rockets and treat his pokemon like shit. Its only that he got his ass handed by Lance that he started changing his way. It should have been you, though. He doesn't get 100% in the original game and his team is quite lacking. He is only rank so high until recent years due to Friend Rival Fatigue. 6.5/10

Its freeform roaming with three main quests. You could do any of the quest in any order, any gym fight in any order, and get any pokemon you want if you can reach to that location.

The region is open at the start(except for a few areas that require upgrades to your ride Pokemon) so you can basically go anywhere and do the objectives in any order.

The story has multiple objectives that aren't just beat the 8 gyms and champion.

The only problem is since it's 3D open world it feels kind of barren, the towns don't feel as lively as previous Pokemon games and the exploration feels a lot different compared to earlier games.

I still think it's the best of the Switch Pokemon games

But then the second gym onwards was just the same shit every time. I would have preferred the gym leaders to have a tera type that was a unique twist rather than being able to sweep their whole team every time with one move.

But also, it's Pokémon. If you expect difficulty in a mainline game without hacks or self-imposed challenges, you will be disappointed every game.

Both of those were sequels though. If you treat the DLCs as such for SV, then there's plenty of difficulty like that. However, it's kinda ruined if you just use your same endgame team from before. I have honestly had way more fun since gen 6 just playing each game as a collectathon rather than a battling game. I catch everything I see and box my whole team every 2 badges. With the all-team exp share, it's easy enough to catch up on levels that way and it prevents battles from turning into clean sweeps so early. SV was still easy when I did this, but it had a shitload of stuff to catch which made it fun, and I rotated the team more because of the titans and team star counting as "badges" for me.

White was a soft reboot of the series intended for new players. You can't even blame it on being a sequel. BW's first gym is the game's tutorial. SV's tutorial is the first eight gyms.
