Spirit of Justice really should have been a Phoenix and Maya game.
The setting was perfect for Maya, we haven't seen her in forever, and the trailers advertised her return like crazy. They even threw in some ship bait to boot
I was so frustrated and disappointed when the game ended up being an Apollo game that gives him another random backstory and Maya's role was nothing more than her being the damsel in distress and the murder suspect again.
She barely had any screen time too (had to make up for it with the dlc case)

If they wanted SoJ to be Apollo's send off, they should've advertised it as such

In general the 4-6 trilogy is the prime example of why they shouldn't have bothered to move on from Phoenix considering at no point the attempt was seriously made, they aren't bad games but I'd place them as the weakest collection.

If you have a DS or 3DS play Ace Attorney 1-3 on that and ignore everything else for your sake. If you don't have a DS or 3DS, emulate the DS versions on your phone with an LCD filter (I think Drastic has a built-in one) a lot of the soul is lost when converting the sprites to HD drawings.
Everything else after the original trilogy doesn't capture the same charm except for a few moments and feels like a slog to play through and read. Every returning character feels like a flanderized cartoon of itself. If you decide to play beyond AA3, everything else is available on Android and I recommend you play it on your phone or a tablet, again, playing these games on a big screen in a non portable format takes away a lot of the charm

Release order is best because of how they redid the visuals as the games went on. Even though they're not translated I believe the GBA versions are worse than the DS ones last I recall. Also keep in mind that release order is best because they introduce new mechanics in each new game or revamp various systems so you end up with things like the Spirit Medium mechanics or petitioning the jury itself.

That guy's image is correct except Great Ace Attorney was made either in the middle or after the 3DS games, I can't remember which so you're not really meant to go in chronological order. There's also the Layton crossover which isn't canon but another PW game.

It is way better than the first game granted… but I have no idea what was the deal with those overhyped faggots

GAA is the legit best duology. The first game might be slow, but at least sets the tone for the second where everything comes together. And it has arguably the best cast of the whole series.

AAI2 suffers from the fact that it has way too much fanservice bait, even though it's still a massive improvement over the first game. The second trilogy, Apollo Justice, remains the most cohesive game. Dual Destinies becoming Athena wasn't a good idea. The only redeemable thing was legit just the last case, but you have to suffer to get to that point. Spirit of Justice makes the mistake of AAI2 with the fanservice, but multiplied by like one thousand. To the point it's downright insulting. Maya is brought back to being just again a defendant, just like the original trilogy, then the whole part is basically, for a most part, a retelling of 2-4 in a different light with the 1-4 twist on it. And let's not forget how 6-2 is a huge Trucy humiliation trial, because Trucy gets depicted as a shitty magician in front of everyone.

Ironically I think the only thing really holding back the later games is holding onto the OG cast. I was enjoying AJ's new characters fairly well but the climax getting hijacked by Phoenix and his Magatama really took the wind out of it, and DD bringing him back and closing the book on the period in between effectively turned seven years' worth of potential story and development into a deadzone the devs won't touch.
I'd like to see what the timeline looks like where the AJ cast gets to develop and shine on their own without having to hang in the shadow of the cast that already had their moment.

The problem with this series is that it's hit the Megaman problem. Too many games released in a short period of time and too many subseries to confusingly try to get into and the exhaustion just set in.

I don't see an AA7 happening until MM11 periods of time pass and even then you'll get one low budget game every 20 years.

Having replayed these recently, the difference between the two is genuinely night and day.
The former is someone seemingly affable who has the ability to push people down while convincing them the situation is their own fault, takes forever to even begin to crack, and manages to regain his composure after his defeat.
The latter exposes his true nature after relatively meager pressure, constantly asserts his immunity but doesn't act on it despite sweating out contradictions early and often, and is ultimately undone not by his own actions and weapons, but by a single drop on Larry's foodcart, at which point he boils into senility.
It's obvious that AAI-5's villain was an attempt to recreate Gant's invulnerability, but there was very little understanding to what made him work other than it taking forever to finish him off.

There is so much ambiguity left intentionally at the end of T&T where Phoenix has what can be considered 'romance flags' with Maya, Franziska, and Iris. There's even hints of the fujo flag with Edgeworth. It's clear that's where the series was supposed to stop and you make whatever ending you want up in your head.
From there on it deviates to hobo Phoenix and the rest of the games but the multiple scenes in T&T was clearly a nod to the ambiguity initially.

Even a little kid could patch the fan translation into the ROM and emulate it, and also it seemed like a majority of anons in AA threads had played the fan translation before the AAI remaster came out.
The games themselves are pretty good albeit overrated but I think the biggest issue is that the plot just redoes Mile's character development that he already went through in the original trilogy.
