MGS1, just emulate unless you really love Psycho Mantis quips thanks to the memoy card simulator on the MC collection, or want 1, VR, and Integral all in one spot. MGSHDFix is recovering the broken graphical effects for 2 and 3, but besides downloading higher quality sound mods, there isn't much on offer besides smudged upscaled textures; emulating HD Collection has the lion's share of these problems remain, and PCSX2 is still imperfect in some regards and has the pressure sensitivity limitation for inputs that need modifier commands to work around. MG1&2, you can emulate them just fine via either BlueMSX for fan translations, or PCSX2 for the Subsistence bonus disc; NES games are even easier to emulate.

It's really either taking a hit on the chin and hoping modders continue fixing the Master Collection further for the sake of convenience, or fucking with a bunch of different emulators just to run these games closer to how they should be with caveats involved.

Ignore anyone recommending the ports, they need mods to not be awful and even then they aren't perfect. Emulation has so few issues so it's best to just go that route.

every entry in the franchise changed the formula in positive and negative ways. mgs3 was the peak of the series, gameplay wise, but the series DID hurt by having fewer interiors after it. narratively, kojima has been chasing the highs of mgs2 since 2001, even with the release of DS2.

chapter 1 and chapter 2 are good. decent level design with a mix of open air design and tight corridors. then chapter 3 hits and you are forced into the european city where you tail the guy to try and find the hideout, what could have been a really cool concept turned into an extremely lame and gay execution where you just slowly trudge along empty european streets and take out soldiers who would apprehend the guy you are tailing (this sort of is callback to the twilight sniping section in MGS2 where you protect emma from guards as she walks along the bridges). the chapter ends with an okay boss fight, but it doesn't really redeem it. then chapter 4 hits with massive nostalgia for those who had played mgs1 10 years prior, and while it WAS cool to go through shadow moses again and had some pretty cool boss fights/scenes, most of the rooms were pretty fucking stupid because the main enemies were the mini-gekkos and stealth wasn't very dynamic/didn't require you to do any advanced techniques to distract the gekkos or anything. the final chapter has one room to stealth (the deck of arsenal gear), a boss fight room (screaming mantis), the bridges past mantis leading to the AI room (these rooms are barely anything, they have a few mini gekkos in them at worst. these are a nuisance at best), and then the ocelot fight.

I don’t agree. It’s cool in concept and very shitty in execution. The game has way too much tell and don’t show imo. The static bases don’t convey the severity of the games tone, and the brain dead AI really kills the immersion of each area that’s supposed to be high stakes, or brutal in whatever they’re doing within the base. TLOU2 should not have more impact in its stealth/enemy mechanics, but somehow it does. I want on a tangent, but I don’t disagree with you in theory, but I feel like the actual game itself does so much to work against the story and setting and themes of the story.

First question is do you have a decent rig that can run UE5 games without major issues? If so you're mostly choosing on a mix of aesthetic front, controls and content.
>Delta: has New Style for MGSV style controls with no sprinting, but comes at the cost of bullet drop for tranquilizer rounds and some odd changes to animations, while Legacy Style is just MGS3 with the new graphics. comes with Snake vs. Monkey, a new take on the Guy Savage secret minigame, boss rush, additional secret targets in every map to shoot plus a QoL tracker on whether you got them or not, and (most of) the Secret Theater with new additions, it's effectively definitive on overall MGS3 content
>Master/HD Collection: it's 60 FPS, 720p MGS3 with some graphical/cinematic effects fucked up, but mostly playable besides the changes needed for controllers without pressure sensitivity, Master Collection has a lot of bugs though; all that extra content mentioned above is completely missing so you're just playing HD Subsistence with some visual/audio issues depending on the version
>PCSX2 Subsistence: all the content that was supposed to be there, fan patches in the emulator itself for widescreen and 60 FPS if your computer can handle it (though if you can run Delta to begin with then this should be mostly fine), but the game was made for pressure sensitive buttons of the dualshock 2 in mind, requiring either awkward clunky usage of the controls or having some pressure modifier buttons to "simulate" different levels of button pressure as you play
Delta isn't inherently bad, but if you're autistic about MGS3 the New Style does a lot of little changes that have pissed some diehards off even if it's basically so much of a remaster that most quirks otherwise remain. But some people will just prefer the PS2 aesthetic. The only "wrong" way to play is Master Collection with no mods/patches to try to unfuck it.
Anonymous No.719769159
>>719768948
And of an Addendum note:
>speaking piracy you won't be able to play this, but Delta will get the Foxhunt multiplayer mode in a couple months; we dunno what it will entail but it will not be a new Metal Gear Online equivalent unfortunately
>via some hackery solutions, PCSX2 can play the classic MGO1 from the Subsistence PS2 content if you and some friends or whatever want to fuck around with it
>Legacy Mode on Delta is ONLY the original, vanilla MGS3 release's fixed camera, with no Subsistence camera in sight, not even a toggle, so that might hinder those looking for retro play with new graphics
>Legacy Filter can be applied to the New Style game

The biggest issue is writing the code to work with x64 architecture. Yes I know there was a working port that ran on xbox 360 dev kits but just how complete and stable the port was is unknown. From what I heard the MGS1 dream section utilized the PS3's internal PS1 emulator software which would be another pain in the ass to deal with. Also the licensing bullshit as mentioned by another anon.

>>719761951
It's more than just the ipod. Kojima loves putting in licensed products whenever possible. All of that can be switched to generic items. There was the Assassin's Creed outfit, Triumph motorcycles, Playboy magazines, and I think there were some licensed songs in the game. A lot of people would be crying about cut content. Besides even if Konami was willing to pay to renew the license sometimes the companies won't allow it for whatever reason. They would also have to go and rerecord some voice lines or awkwardly cut them out.

I have noticed something. Kojima has always written narrative where the main character is always "on the defensive" so to speak. Whether it's Big Boss, Solid Snake, or Raiden, the main one is always being duped to some degree or is finding out some group with tremendous influence.
Take MGS2. You only play as Snake for as long as he remains at a state of great disinformation. For the rest of the narrative, Snake (now an NPC) is with Otakon at the offensive, with greater knowledge and actively going after the Patriots. It's the same situation with MGS5, where you don't play as the real Big Boss for the entire game (except Ground Zero, where he is fooled by XOF and Emerich).

It really tells me how weak of a writer Kojima is.

Apparently, it ran great, but the the reason for why it didnt release on Xbox was Kojima didnt care for Xbox and because it would be on like 4 discs.

I started emulating 4 and when you get to play it, it's actually good like I remember. That doesn't fix the retarded rushed hammy fanservice story and the fact that the start of the game is press forward -> cutscene -> press forward ->cutscene. But they are skippable and people buy rereleases just to fuck around and play sandbox style anyway.

This is a stupid post

It's an extremely common thing that the main character and the audience's perspective is low information, and not just in spy/conspiracy stories. I can't believe someone would say they "noticed" this. It's like noticing water is wet.

Kojima is a weak writer because he writes stupid shit, not because water is wet in his stories.

They can cope and make up shit to not sound as stupid as letting a different protag get to them but it has the best areas
Most substantial amount of gameplay until 5
Best bosses
Good ost
And most wacky mgs shit
Out of any of the games
Mgs3 is a movie with 4 small areas they reuse 2-3 times each and only a single good boss
It blows my mind they use the single not even that good intro area 3 times for the first 20% of the game

I think it's kind of weird to say it was pointless unless it contributes to the larger anthology, especially when you can just make more games that connect unconnected games. Also consider this in the other direction, MGS4 is more pointless if you didn't play MGS2, that doesn't say anything useful. All that matters is if it's an entertaining story. You didn't like the story, that's the problem. It's not this reason you've come with after the fact even if you think you would've preferred a closer sequel or prequel in a vacuum. But that also has nothing to do with if the story is shit or not or if you'll hate it. Of course you are capable of hating direct sequels.

That aside I was never a fan of ocelot being a medium for liquid with his attached arm. MGS3 succeeded in making that less stupid. Then kojima did all that work just to retcon it and he was only pretending.

To be fair the database says different. I know there's issues with the database being canon, but at least it presents a possible interpretation of the story where Ocelot wasn't just pretending the whole time.

I'm almost certain Kojima came up with the hypnosis explanation just because he wanted another layer of "nothing being what it seems" not because he was interested in having a realistic explanation for how a possession could be possible.

What does that supposed to mean? MGS3 is a prequel in a distant past mostly disconnected from the previous two games while 4 is a sequel intended to end the series, of course it would be pointless if you skipped an entry. MGS1 and 2 lose nothing if 3 never existed, it recontextualizes everything for the worse while being a dogshit story on its own. You've been memed into liking it. You will deny and argue but it's the truth.

Little Boys literally imagined themselves as snake when they grow up
Now he gets replaced by a pretty boy twink.

I'm saying MGS3 as a prequel is not pointless because you have to wait on a sequel for MGS3 to be connected to the anthology. Time gaps in either direction need a connecting work.

Another way to think about it, MGS3 is not an effective prequel to MGS1&2 as you've said because it doesn't really have anything to do with them, it's effectively a prequel to MGS4. MGS3 and MGS4 make more sense if you think about them as a two parter with a huge time gap inbetween. Weird structure sure, but I don't see anything bad about the structure. It's like starting your final act with a flashback except it's game length.

Oh? My real opinion? MGS2 has a shit story and the world building went to shit right there. The series anthology/saga is also terrible and MGS4 flopped at its chance to half way recover after MGS3 contributed little. But MGS1 and MGS3 have good contained stories, MGS1 having the best scenario writing hands down, operatic tones, and the best villains. MGS3 is popcorn entertainment with a likeable support cast and a strong ending.
