And their upgradeable houses are really powerful. Having them be able to call newcomers earlier is very good too. In one game I reached 100 pop because of them.
Bats are INSANELY powerful in the mid-late game with their perk of being able to exile people. Not only can you control your population, but you can reach the point where everyone in the settlement is getting x2 multipler on every production. Very fun, but they're very very hard to take care of before that point

Also the bamboo flat biome is my favorite by far
One of my favorite things was setting up a good farmland, which is what the biome was specifically designed around as the base mechanic. You can place fertile soil anywhere you want, and thus create very good looking large farms. They get a bit unruly when you have a 4 range farm though, and I've not been able to complete one yet before the game is over or I run out of stuff to keep the lil nibba happy
