Did you ever notice how all controversy surrounding violence in media completely evaporated at some point? Games like GTA were called "murder simulators" regularly because you could press X to hit someone with a bat--nowadays we have VR games that let you physically dismember enemies with your own two hands, and there's zero controversy.
Don't get me wrong, violence can still be controversial, but only if it's directed at a protected group. A scene where a woman or minority is viciously killed can still cause controversy, but violence in-and-of itself isn't controversial in the slightest. You will literally court more controversy by having an attractive female lead in revealing clothing than you will for putting gallons of blood and gore in your game.
Just look at Mortal Kombat. It's comical to see how they've de-sexualized the characters so as not to offend anyone while also making the fatalities a hundred times more gruesome than they ever were before.
I don't want to go back to the "video games cause violence" age, but I can't help but feel that it's not a good sign for our culture if there is no reaction at all to violence anymore.
