Marvel were interested in acquiring the rights to Miracleman, as was Gaiman who had written for the Miracleman book previously, and they apparently lay with MacFarlane according to himself due to him buying out the bankrupt previous company that owned him, so they backed Gaiman's Spawn royalties suit in the hopes of shaking them loose in the process. But in any case, Gaiman had created three characters for Spawn, including Angela, and the final settlement was a cash payout to Gaiman and the rights to Angela, while the rights to the other two Spawn characters went to MacFarlane. Then Gaiman sold her to Marvel, as you said. MacFarlane is a mouthy motherfucker so he makes enemies fast.

That's not even getting into the longer Marvelman/Miracleman mess that goes back decades before that.
It's a convoluted story. The lesson is "don't rely on handshakes, get it in writing".

The only one that might work as a character different enough from Peter would be Spider-Man 2099, since he has a somewhat different powerset from Peter and a different fighting style. Although it might be a bit similar to Black Panther with the claws and climbing parts.

Otherwise they're all just too redundant in terms of Spider-powers, from Silk to Spider-Gwen. And yes that includes Miles, he isn't different from Spider-Man, he's just Spider-Man but with a dozen extra powers put on top, Miguel at least has actual different base powers and a sci-fi aesthetic. You could make him a Vanguard if you want to do the same as the Spider-Verse movie and make him a lot bigger than Peter, though obviously still far smaller than Venom.

Otherwise for Spider-Man characters it's really all villains you're looking at for additions. Not that the game doesn't need more villains, but it would be a little unlikely to get like six or seven of them from one hero's rogues gallery, and you're actually kind of spoiled for choice, as so many of Spidey's villains would fit right into Rivals. Goblin obviously, but also Doc Ock, Carnage, Mysterio, Sandman, Lizard, Kingpin and Electro would all be super easy to make kits for and each would be pretty unique in the game.

I guess, but it's working kind of backwards. Basically taking someone who is inherently redundant and trying to justify adding them anyway by tinkering. I think the time is better spent on non-redundant characters. Yeah, characters get tweaked to justify gameplay movesets, but they also tend to be slots that need filling. Like yeah it's a little odd for Adam Warlock to be squishy and not able to fly, but there's also a type of healer role that he fulfills n the process, and it does correspond reasonably to his messianic character. Whereas if you want a sword wielding DPS, Miles is not exactly who you immediately think of.

So you'd only really be adding him if you were specifically determined to add Miles himself. I don't think he'd pass the many hurdles from brainstorm to concept to development to testing to release.

Jessica Drew shoots fucking lasers out of her fingers and can fly. I'm not saying we NEED 8 Spider-Men in the game, I'm just saying it's utterly and completely irrational to treat Marvel Rivals Spider-Man like he's everything a Spider-Man could possibly be.
