I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Yes. I just hate the shit out of the obnoxious Linux activists and the clear sabotage by committee, the OS has gone through over the years. Microsoft had HDR with Windows 8. But because of Linux's committees on having a committee, to arrange a committee on possibly implementing HDR. I see the news of them finally having shit that was baseline Windows and expecting a fucking medal for it.
When you call them out of the obvious lazy fucking bastards they are. They hide behind "It's a hobby OS" bull fucking shit, you have millions of corpo cock money funding you.

Linux (userland) ABI compatibility breaks all the time, for many devs it's more stable to only ship Windows and have users use Proton to translate.
Aside from BREAKING compatibility, supporting all the possible configurations is also a pain in the ass. You would expect graphics middleware to handle all of the X11 vs Wayland bullshit for you (and all the things Wayland doesn't support by design, which in some cases is actually a certain foot-shaped DE refusing to implement things), but it's not always the case. Most devs don't have the time to implement and test that shit for a minority userbase.

Its not like its the only default wallpaper or something, its one of many CachyOS specific choices and of course you can get a ton of other wallpapers built in from various desktop environments or other sources, atop manually selecting others.
>Gooner
I don't know what the problem is. You'd have more reason to be upset if they were censoring stuff like this and instead enforcing that HR flat colorful style from a few years ago or whatnot? Unless this is literally the first thing that comes up when you boot into your desktop, I can't see any reason to be upset. NTA. Windows tends not to respect your Linux install and can do shit like nuke your bootloader either when you first install it or on a subsequent update. It's just safer to quarantine them to separate drives and then you can do full drive encryption as well. As an anecdote I physically removed my Linux drive while installing Windows and even then it still deleted the EFI entry for my Linux bootloader.

They're not going to literally blackmail you, but your data might be sold or leaked in various ways. The rootkit module might also itself contain security vulnerabilities that other parties can use to compromise your computer.
The best way to avoid other people gaining control over your computer is not to give them that level of access.

240Hz = 4.16666... milliseconds per screen refresh. The monitor's refresh interval won't be exactly that, and they normally just round to 240hz for marketing purposes, but obviously the actual video driver needs to match the real rate exactly.
(or maybe something in the UI is just rounding a floating point number incorrectly)

(nta) It's perfectly fine 99% of the time, but there are occasional issues.
There was a longstanding problem with KDE+Wayland+Nvidia leading to stuttering, but the fixes for that landed earlier this year, and the framerate has been perfectly smooth for me since. If you're looking at that setup, make sure you're running an up-to-date distro.
I do get an occasional (maybe once every 2 weeks?) Wayland crash where one of my monitors essentially freezes, and logs point to some kind of Nvidia issue. I have to switch consoles (ctrl+alt+f1 followed by ctrl+alt+f2) to reset it. It's annoying but not bad enough to switch back to Windows, and I assume it will be fixed eventually.

Right click the game, select configure, and hit the Game options tab, it says it is disabled by default now, but it definitely didn't used to be. It used to put all kinds of shit in my system folders, I deleted them once and accidentally deleted save files for games I wanted to keep. A bunch of them were being saved there.

I've been using Nobara. It's based on Fedora, but everything is basically setup out-of-the-box for gaming. Steam and shit are already installed, it has a built-in GUI update manager, and it's easy to install whatever you want with the Discover software center.

Thats the thing, I'm not trying to do anything, I just saw the question "why don't you use Linux" for the 500th time and was like "yeah why DON'T I use it" so I installed it and realized I have no clue what to do. So I signed up. It looks like a prerequisite class for learning server management and shit so maybe I will get into that just to mess around. The class was cheap since its a 1 credit class so I'm just going to see how it goes. They gave me pic related for the course. I just learn better when there is a mild bit of instruction, like I can use Python and C++ but it wasn't until I took classes for each that I was like "oh this is a useful way for me to solve X at work or do Y in my personal life."

Alright, $10K AMD tower here. I'm about ready to scrape this four-paneled bloat off my system for good. I've already tried Mint (fine but SystemD), Gentoo (couldn't even get it to a desktop environment), Salix, at the recommendation of Diggy from Neocities, for an easy security setup plus maybe dark web (nothing), and probably some other shit I'm forgetting. What Linux distro am I installing next and what other distros should I test on it? Main daily driver stuff right now is games, mods, emulation, Homestuck and doing research for /V/ The Musical 2025.

>Are you using linux for gaming?
Not anymore, and I'm glad I made that decision.
The last straw: you know how in Fallout: New Vegas the Lucky 38's light can be seen from almost anywhere on the map? Like a guiding light that taunts you everywhere you go, to come closer.
Well, on linux there was no light there. It didn't glow, and took a very well put together design choice, and threw it out the window.
What else could I be missing if I keep playing on linux (if the game actually works out-of-the-box or at all, that is)?
Windows 10 has it's issues (and will soon die) but games (and lighting) work; and work as intended.
You'll never fool me again, linuxfags; your OS is a LIE covered in honeyed promises of being superior, having better user experience and high preformences and less bloat (like anyone cares about bloat that much). You'll never take me back, you hear?
For me, linux is good for practicing cybersec and that's it.
P.S.: I was playing on a Fedora install, if that matters.

Afaik it's just like Arch but you choose which init system and desktop environment you want when you download the installer iso. Looks like there is a choice between OpenRC, runit, s6, and dinit. There is also Devuan, which is based on Debian, it also doesn't use systemd, but I have no idea what it would be like on a $10k computer, I use it on an old craptop that Artix didn't work on.

>do you need super powerful hardware like you do for Win11
Depends on the distro. If you have a total shitbox of a system install a lightweight distro like lubuntu or mint xfce. Even on a decent machine some of the more heavy distros like mint cinnamon can be a bit taxing on resources with background processes. AMD just werks, Nvidia is better than it used to be but not great. I use Windows on my 3060 X1 Carbon because of it. Battery life is also generally worse on Linux than Windows on laptops, using powertop, tlp-ui and auto-cpufreq is essential, even then you'll just get 4 to 5 hours watching streams or videos. What is nice is that a lot of older games that run in 4:3 resolutions in fullscreen work a lot better, and you don't have to force windowed mode using programs like DXWND or fuck around with patches and compatibility mode shit, for force single core performance with task manager.
>does it have something like Windows Defender
Most distros don't out of the box but honestly you don't really need it. You can configure firewalls and harden it. Also same as Windows, be careful what random scripts or programs you run.

I want to assume that I did but I don't remember what or how I ran the game; I think I just launched it from steam though there might have been a third-party software involved. It was in early 2018 so my memory is hazy.
That's a pet peeve of mine with Linux, it needs so much to do what Windows does with no other input at all.

Games using open source engines tend to work really well, one of the cool features of Steam for Linux is the ability to install third-party compatibility tools, and that can be used to install the open source native engines for some games.
But yes, native Linux builds are often afterthoughts, same reason Microsoft has never been able to get devs into their newer environments. All the focus for most commercial game devs is still using win32 compatibility because that is the largest audience, so Valve's approach of building a better compatibility solution was a good idea.

RX 580 should actually still be good when using the latest up to date Mesa. But if you were doing this almost 8 years ago that might explain things.

i got vac banned because of this shit. don't ever try linux if your account is important to you.
Linux mint would be a great option for linux gamers right now, but it's not perfect. It has some issues.
1. It has default settings that arent configured right like vm.max_map_count isn't set to a higher value, like it is default in arch linux i'm pretty sure
2. I would like them to configure the XFCE desktop so the taskbar icons are more aligned correctly and the right sizes when increasing icon size
3. The out of the box pipewire settings are too lax so sometimes you get crackling in games with proton/wine audio and you have to lower the default clock quantums or some shit. It fixed it either way for me and there's zero crackle or static. A simple script can do this so its not a big deal.
I would like to see them fix these issues. I'm going to try out linux mint XFCE to see if the theming changes apply to it or just cinnamon.

most likely because Nvidia drivers on linux are garbage. If they weren't linux would dumpster windows.
That being said I will never fault anyone for sticking with windows. The amount of bullshit required to learn how to do the most basic crap along with workarounds in comparison to windows is staggering. Plus none of us will ever argue with the fact that some online multiplayer games can't be played on linux using anti-cheat. Basically devs treat linux like an after thought which creates most of the frustrations people have when switching. it's like
>"why the fuck would I test if this works on anything other than windows before shipping it out? That is what Proton-ge is for lol"

The open source drivers. They're the default for AMD hardware these days, because Valve has put a lot of work into them. In 2018 their support was still fairly new, and there was very rapid improvement, but also still rough edges. Some distributions may also have still been using the official AMD drivers.
As for Proton, in 2018 Proton and DXVK were brand new. Guides for gaming with AMD on Linux using Wine would often walk you through setting up Gallium 9, which was the previous high performance open source D3D driver for Linux.
It ultimately lost out to DXVK because it was hardware specific, and AMD hadn't yet grabbed the majority of the Linux gaming GPU market.

I'm still using Xorg, no one is forcing me to change to Wayland. Eventually it'll make the most sense for me to change but I don't really see anything torn down ever outside of like Gnome forcing certain shit but if you use Gnome you get what you deserve.

Technically, yes you can be a stubborn hermit and stay on whatever you want but for a normal person, they want to use new shit so if that's gated off due to the community's consensus, then it feels about the same as things being forced.

Such an easy pass. No thanks. Windows 11 is so godlike. There's just no reason to switch to something completely inferior on all fronts.
If it even had 5-10 FPS gain, in every videogame. Everyone would use it and grit their teeth, but it can't even do that and then you find out linux has no games and can't do shit anyways. It's just so not worth it. Easy pass, easy pass.

The way i see it, there's only two choices. Win10 LTSC and linux.
Both are annoying, and you have to weight if you prefer the annoyances of linux or the annoyances of Win10.
For me, linux is less annoying, but i can see in this thread and several similar ones, that depending on what your play, what's your hardware etc, win10 might be less annoying for you.
