They just straight up 1:1 used the HD ports of the original PS2 game as the build basis to the point that many original bugs persist where they didn't deliberately try to patch out exploits. Back in the day, people mainly bought the physical copies and most of the game "sales" were on launch, that's because retailers had to stock on the shipments, so they could sell them. The copies that didn't sell, either sat for a while on the shelves or in magazines, or were discounted later.

No physical copies sell a lot less, digital sales are overwhelming majority, so there's no need to overstock on the copies, bloating the launch sales.

In theory I should hate this remake like 90% of the others being released right now (*cough cough* Oblivion *cough cough*) but so far I haven't had any issues. Works right out the box, even for being fucking UE5 sloppa. Seems to be somewhat faithful to the OG as well. Can't even complain about the art direction as well since it seems to be following the footsteps of MGS V, which looked nice. I applaud Konami for doing something most AAA studios seem to somehow struggle with.
