What we're seeing right now is oversaturation on the market
Too much supply, not enough demand. There are WAY too many games, and not enough people to buy them. Gen Z purchasing power when it comes to games in the US is falling like a rock. People can barely afford living, so of course they stop buying games. And the older gen is not enough to keep all the studios afloat.

This is why we're seeing layoffs everywhere, studios closing down etc.

The market is increasingly focus on fewer games. As in, the big games will get all the attention, while smaller and mid sized games will be ignored.

Maybe gaming need to scale back to become affordable again. Stop AAAA projects and focus on smaller, cheaper games.

oh it is, since they have all the money.
it's just that they are no longer the investors' target audience anymore.

It will correct itself. Always does. AAA studios will continue to die. Indie games will continue to sell for $20. The market will conform to the consumer

Yeah...kind of, maybe. There's more games coming out, but the large majority of them are indie shit. Steam still has the same amount of games with over 1000 reviews in 2024, as the year prior, and again the year prior as well. This year so far, it's the same.

The barrier for entry is lower, that's why more are getting it, but the large large majority of newcomers will make a game, fail, then quit for good. This will continue until more of the "don't make a videogame" knowledge spreads more.

Bigger studio's are struggling because they make shit with half the staff outsourced to India and stretch their budgets way beyond what they should be, and the development cycles are way too long.

There are literally more games than ever before, people genuinely can't fathom how fucked the industry is for new IPs

A real problem that I rarely see /v/ discuss is that the whole microtransaction game as a service thing was TOO successful

So now a dozen or so, decade old games control the majority of the market. League, Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite, Warzone, GTAO, you know what I mean

The Skinner Box is so perfected that the industry is wilting because they can't get the mice to leave. This shit didn't happen back when Street Fighter 2 or Quake 3 or god forbid World of Warcraft was the biggest game in the world.

Good point, microtransactions relies on people's stupidity, of which there is a lot.

Dumb kids seriously thinks that paying $1 100 times is cheaper than paying $80 for a full game.

This, for example most people bitch at Warner for trying to make another live service game AGAIN after Multiversus and the Suicide Squad, but they seem to forget that before Marvel Rivals, the avengers game was one of the biggest flops in the history of the industry, the black pill is that even mildy successful live service games are more successful than the best selling singleplayer games

I've had this creeping suspicion about Bethesda, that Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76 are nowhere near the top of the GaaS pile, but even as mediocrities they are still generating such a flood of revenue that Bethesda is disincentivized to make actual sequels
Anonymous No.719865862 >>719865905
Also that people already have too much games already available. Between F2P games, games you've previously bought, games at subscription services, games that were given "for free" with Games with Gold or PS Now or just flat out free at GOG or Epic...

My backlog is around 50 games if I just count games I REALLY want to play, but if I count games I have a passing interest in it's over 200

This, too. I'm not interested in a new console, because there's already so much to play, and the difference in graphics isn't that great anymore.

We're five years into the Ninth Gen and there still aren't any definitive Ninth Gen games yet

Shit there's barely any definitive Eighth Gen games and that was twelve years ago

Time to remaster The Last of Us again

This. Let those fuckers go out of business for putting slop that no one asked for. Indie will never stop existing and that's the only place where you see true passion, vision and creativity for projects being made. Those artificial 50-100 people average AA companies are literally by product of capitalist minmaxing, those are business projects and nothing more. They meant to be disposable and so is the products they produce at the bare minimum cost. With rise of Unreal it was made easier than ever which is why Unreal on stuff that they do in the first place, presentability first, the rest is irrelevant.

true but then again, most of the people stuck in those games are young people. Old people, 30+ years olds, are the ones buying and keeping AAA games on lifesupport probably because young people are broke and their parents are broke too, so those live service games naturally gained a loyal audience. Remember microtransactions don't cost $70 and you don't have to spend money on everything either. Is a relatively cheaper experience compared to spending $70 on a new game every couple of months.

New games also require a new console or a more powerful expensive PC, another reason why a $20 Metroidvania game that runs on a potato is so successful. The young generation are holding gaming back and making everything become stale.
