Are you actually getting filtered by Elvoret? I didn't think that was possible.
Try to get some Cure spells. You can Draw them from the snake enemies. If you have any cards, Quetzacoatl has Card Refine, so he may be able to turn some of them into healing items.

You should not forget to draw Siren from Elvoret; she specifically has a healing magic refine ability.

You can also refine curaga from tents if I recall correctly

So what is the "normal" way to play this game?
I don't mean getting 4k HP and ultimate weapons in the starting areas, are you just supposed to like spend a turn drawing magic at the start of every encounter?

Draw magic when you feel like it. Convert cards and items. Drain draw points. Explore and beat monsters. It's not rocket science. There's not one right way.

Engage a bit with all of the systems to fortify your junctions as needed, because barring exceptions raw level ups and regular grinding don't amount to much.
I think the problem is the game doesn't tell your very well that the card game is a very good alternative and drawing stuff to 100 isn't the best way to stockpile magic. The problem is it's still a card game and not everyone playing a jrpg/ff might want to try it.
Also gamers are autists so the idea of casting 2 or 3 spells from your stack of 100 Junctioned Firaga at a trade-off of a 0,01% power down in your stat is too much for them so they never use any.
