Phyre represents the new vision of VTMB after the previous attempt went to shit (powerful Elder rubbing shoulders with power players), while Fabien is a safe and familiar callback for older fans (struggling fledgling trying to get some answers and being a shit-eating errand boy).

That shot in the new trailer of the prince using dominate on Fabien and telling him "THE CASE IS CLOSED!" is a direct callback to LaCroix using dominate on the fledgling in 1. You can expect Fabien's gameplay to be full of stuff like this. A huge reason why Fabien was added to the game was specifically to cater (or pander if you prefer) to fans of the first game. His quests are styled more like VTMB1, the way he interacts with human characters is more like VTMB1, all that stuff.

That's how it works here. In the first game you choose a background at the start of the game. Here, you answer questions throughout the game, and character call back to them. We saw in the Paradox stream that you could tell Fabien that you were a pirate that killed a lot of people and that was super fun. This will be called back to later. Maybe you meet a crew member, who knows. But the point is that these questions are peppered through the game instead of being an upfront choice. It's a decent approach, but we'll see how the execution works. They claim the game is 20-25 hours long. I have a "we shall see" attitude.

VTMB1 is a game with pretty bad core game mechanics that people love because it has a compelling world, characters, atmosphere, music, and the gameplay isn't unplayably bad or anything. The original version of 2 was definitely more Deus Ex like. But it was going in a new direction because even the people who made VTMB1 acknowledged that it was not very well made mechanically, and a lot of its ideas for game design were very generic cookie cutter early 2000s FPS stuff. So 2 from the start was trying to avoid being a generic FPS game. Still have FPS elements, but downplay them heavily. The new version has carried on that spirit and taken it in a bit of a different direction. I get the impression that the new version didn't want to have guns at all, but they compromised, much like how they compromised by adding a Malkavian second protag to the game. Trying to strike a balance between being a totally new vision of the franchise vs having some of the things people liked about the first game.

When I say "they" I mean the developers. Their reasoning for the player foregoing the use of weapons is that they are so old that they would see no use of them. That's complete and total horseshit, there are plenty of Kindred three times that age in the setting that use weapons. The only thing that would confuse them initially are firearms, but guns are intuitive and the protagonist would be able to swiftly learn their use in a few nights at most with proper instruction, something which any Kindred but especially one 4 centuries old would be able to easily obtain.

For that matter, they would be dimly familiar with their existence since they were around in the 1600s, well after firearms were invented. If they'd ever seen a cannon in their life they'd be able to understand the basic gist of the weapon. They might not be familiar with the overall mechanics, but then so aren't most of the people that own guns and commit crime today.

Sabbat needed a boost, they've been lagging behind in terms of power behind new Anarach and Camarilla stuff. Also V5 means there's no new Antitribu, so clan-specific card for Sabbat (Antitribu) clans are dead end. BUT the old (pathless) Sabbat vampire can adopt a path, meaning the new cards will be usable for old vampires. It should refresh some older archetypes. Paths are compromise between giving everyone some new tools without letting someone use everything at once.

Path of Death and Soul is just further upgrade for the new Oblivion discipline.
