You're sort of right kinda, if a bit cynical. It is a gamble. However the industry is so full of Minimum Viable Product and pozzed bullshit, it literally has never been a more opportune time to release a good game and make some dough, a lot of these companies (wrongfully) don't even feel like they have to try.

False analogy since HK sold based on merit. Not every indie sidescroller has equal chances of winning, quality matters. The redditors in that screenshot only saw a trailer and didn't know the extend of the actual game let alone how it plays.

The actual wisdom to take away from this is that you need to produce something of a certain minimum quality. Then you just need to pull the right levers (sending streamers/youtubers free codes, emailing journalists, shilling on reddit like tjos guy's """"friend """")

I can totally see why Hollow Knight is a massive success and something like Lone Fungus isn't. The quality difference is immense.

Shame I don't really like either. Many games simply don't click for me. Much prefer something like Astalon instead.
