Everything was literally brown and grey until after WWII. All these modern colors only came about in the 1950s during the seldom-talked about chemical revolution. Your options went from metal or wood to 50 shades of polymer, plastic, vinyl. I mean they had paint but that was mostly to keep wood or metal preserved, and that was basically always a structure's exterior. But back on topic, people didn't know what to do with the fuckers until the 1960s when people went absolutely fucking insane. I've seen the brochures from that time, the most god awful combinations of pink and yellow and grey and green and slime and puke all mixed together into flooring or wallpaper or whatever. Someone born in 1955 that lived to 2005 could have gone their whole life touching nothing but the ugliest shit imaginable.

No, the big color explosion happened during the Victorian era. People don't talk about it because the early 1910s swiveled back to drab colors and everything got repainted brown and grey by the time people were making color prints.

Victorian houses were painted in bright colors, and their interiors were wallpapered in burgundy and floral patterns.

It also didn't help that the bright colors in the Victorian era were made with heavy metals like arsenic, so people would actually die from their housepaint offgassing. Probably why the Germans are obsessed with leaving a window open at night.

The pea greens and rust oranges were mostly a late 1960s to 1970s thing and had to do with misinterpreted psychology. Late 1970s was faux wood paneling. 1980s electronics were black or metallicized plastic, while buildings were blue-grey. 1990s were mostly beige and cream, and then you got the brightly colored electronics in the late 90s.
