remakes have been bad for as long as they've existed. the only justifiable ones are like RE1 where its mostly the original dev team creating their intended vision that was hampered by limitations. we have not needed remakes since 2005-8 onwards

The reason we have so many remakes is because this generation doesn't make anything new, or they do but nobody gives a shit about it. Why would we care about any of this old stuff if the new stuff is better? We're on our 48th incarnation of Alien right now, it's still the same alien going around killing people. Every modern remake is essentially taking an old popular game, then homogenizing and watering it down to make it more approachable to zoomers who want to be "in" on a classic game that all the older gamers like.

Even a game as faithful as MGSDelta includes a surprising number of these changes.

While I am skeptical of remakes in any circumstance, the one way I think it would be interesting would be to completely reimagine it and do something unique and provocative.

That defeats the purpose though, because CEOs pursue remake because they (1) will have lower costs for obvious reasons and (2) try and take an already popular name and sell it to an even more mainstream and lower common denominator audience.

The current remake culture is the ultimate admission that "old good, new bad" is a fact.

Yes and no. I think RE 1, 2, 3, and 4 remakes were cool because it's wasn't just a 1:1 remake with no changes. FF7 Remake and Rebirth are sort of the same as RE, in that they follow the same story beats but in a different way but FF7 remakes are also a sequel series. Delta is just a 1:1 remake with better graphics. I don't see the point in that.

Not really Persona 3 Reloaded, Resident Evil 4 and Silent Hill 2 were amazing remakes and a lot of fun to play again. Nobody forces you to replay a game unless you want to.

Every remake seems to miss things about the original that are important. You can add more detail with new models and effects, but doing so without having a singular vision and intention like a good director shows.

I'm not sure remake fatigue would any aspect to this if performance wasn't so shit to begin with. I did enjoy the Bionic Commando remake. I recall enjoying the NES version during Halloween many moons ago. my only complaint is that I prefer the NES design of the main character compared to the remake.
