That's a lotta bodies. Playing without the time crystal means you REALLY need to pay attention to the crit game. Remember, snipers have de facto crit+10 on enemy phase unless you can counter them. Ironically, Bunet is kinda good for an ironman because of his high base luck.

Never done an Ironman attempt before. Is there some kind of agreed rule set or is it straight forward?
On a side note about Engage. I wonder why the Break system wasn’t mentioned as one of the gameplay systems. I feel like it was pretty big aside from just the Emblem rings

It's basically just no resets, run's over if game over. In Engage specifically it typically means no time crystal too because that constitutes resetting.

No resets, no using rewinds in the games that have it (Mila's Turnwheel, Divine Pulse, Timecrystal)
Any other rules are up to you. Some people like playing a pseudo-ironman where you don't reset the whole file if the lord dies, but I don't like that since it just means you can 'accidentally' suicide to reset a chapter.

Chapter 1 can be gotten through with clever positioning, ranged attacks, and use of combat arts, but afterwards you have to really abuse monastery stuff to build your roster.

you have to low deploy to concentrate the exp and weapon rank training otherwise you can't beat the stat inflation. specifically for speed and hit rate. my recommendation is byleth focusing on bows + your lord focusing on axes and flying, lysithea is a must on any maddening run because warp, dark spikes and mastermind. recruit asap if off gd. then a gofer unit or two that lightly builds authority for buffs so you can enable a vantage wrath juggernaut with the counter at any distance gambit. or stride, etc.

that's why you're not all in on one unit. if there's a priority target your juggernaut can't take care of you have someone invested in bows (hunter's volley) and another in magic.
also armors aren't very threatening on maddening compared to flyers, archers and assassins.
