You guys may be a bit stuck up, but you’re awesome for supporting indie devs that dont have big audiences. These games deserve a chance. I got too much stuff on my plate right now, but I try to find obscure stuff when I can. As a developer I try to study different genres of games to see what people find and interesting and why, so I like to play things out of my comfort zone to see what makes them tick. So many games to play, so little time. I ought to be playing less and developing more, but it’s all for β€œresearch” right guys? Its heartwarming to see anons willing to take a chance on experimental games. Im sure you guys are playing some neat stuff but you ought to try and recommend the most interesting ones you find.

I had a friend like that who acted like an average /v/edditor and was super elitist about obscure vidya. I enjoyed him calling me normalnigger cattle because I knew he was just too autistic to express himself in a normal way and he could recommend some really good vidya. He sometimes had a meltie because I was better at vidya for example he raved about Alien Soldier but couldn't finish it and when I did he called me a secondary and said I got lucky and cheesed the game not that the game can be cheesed afaik. Good times. Unfortunately he succumbed to a bad case of alcoholism.

We do have a bit of overlap, I played the children of the Sun demo, but it didn't make the cut for full acquisition. I think that is the case for night loops and And Roger as well. I have 500 hours in Hitman, it's my #2 most played after Stardew Valley.

One time I saw a poster on here sharing his steam profile and asking for friends. I checked out his wishlist and it turns out the guy has practically identical taste to me, with one exception. Every so often I browse his wishlist and can find obscure game's tailored to me. You just have to ignore so the my little pony games, which, surprisingly, is not a small number.

almost might have been worth being his friend, actually. He doesn't know I stalk him still.

Fuck if I know, man, taste is kind of a subjective thing and games aren't like books or movies, I can knock off those pretty easily in a few hours but games are a much larger time investment than a typical book or movie.

From that screenshot, the only games I have actually beaten are Deep Sleep: Labyrinth of the Forsaken, Trauma: Broken Paradise, The Drifter, Last Report and Undermine 2. But Undermine 2 was early access it might not count as "beating".

Still 5 games in about a month is not a bad number. So you could consider the ones that drew me in enough to play the whole thing to be "the best". I suspect Siren's Well will be really good but I have to play the first two games in the trilogy before I can get there.

Actually my current indie of the year. It's short and cheap, so you don't lose much, even if you don't like it. In fact, you could even refund after finishing easily. Fun fact: the dev is a Japenese Christian.

This one is short, too, but it's free. Note that it's rather dark and depressing. I know that some people can't play games like that. I say "play", but it's mostly "read".

Webm related. Only in Japanese and Chinese (different store pages). It's a free prologue. A kind of RPG/puzzle game where you play around with words. There's a full, paid version available, but it's pretty expensive, so I haven't played it yet.

Playing the games that no one else has is the best. For one, I can talk to the developers whenever I want. I can even insult them and they would still prefer that over radio silence. Seeing your game get released and getting no reviews and no forum posts is the worst.

Even if I go on there and say something like: It doesn't make any goddamn sense that a demon would try to avoid getting sent back to hell, because demons live in hell, so it's not a huge deal for them to get sent there.

The developer will just be like: "wow, this guy actually played all the way to the end."

You sure can't do that with major label games. They never listen to a word anyone says. So yeah, I hang around the games with less than five reviews and stuff like that.

Well, I really liked his previous game, Vaccine: Rebirth, which was the exact same concept but with Resident Evil instead of Metal Gear Solid. That might just be a personal preference thing though. I like Survival Horror over stealth so that might be the only reason why I think his earlier game was superior. Vaccine only managed 21 reviews.

Anyway, Spy Drops is pretty good, I like the slow-mo that plays when you kick people in the head from behind, but I haven't played it very much yet. And actually there's a much more polished version of the concept of "Resident Evil Roguelike" coming out soon. There's actually several but this is the one I'm thinking about right now:

well... I did buy Stardew Valley on launch day but I don't think I bothered to talk to the guy. Then again, even though he's famous now you can still talk to him pretty easily so that doesn't even really count.

I spoke to Manon Gage once, I suppose. She was the lead actress in Immortality but she hasn't exactly found fame past the video game even though she's pretty talented.

One time a game developer used my steam review for that bit of the trailer where you flash quotes quickly from news agencies except he didn't have any of those so he had to use mine. He later took it down though and made a different trailer.

NTA but I understand his point of view. I do the same with music, I just pick what to listen to from what's popular, what my friends are listening to, and what the algorithm recommends. That's because although I enjoy music in the background I don't care about it THAT much. Sure there's probably some amazing obscure bands and genres I could find if I dedicate a couple of hours every day to listening and filtering through them but I have other things I'm already busy being passionate about. I guess I would be "casual music listener", so that anon is also just a casual video game player which is fine.

Depends of your definition of "new", but I either play new releases or games that can be outside of my comfort zone. I have a long experience in videogames so I can usually tell from a first glance if something looks fun/interesting, actual disappointments are rather rare.
The recent titles I've got to experience (for the first time) since this June, on Switch:
>Crow Country
>Shine Post: Be Your Idol!
>L.A. Noire
>Stubbs the Zombie (this one ended up to be too janky on the second half with the maps getting bigger, and the enemies stronger while your zombie allies become more sparse)
>Bomb Rush Cyberfunk
>Donkey Kong Bananza
>Kunitsugami
>Darkwood
>Parry Nightmare
>Fast Fusion
>Little Nightmares 1
>Patapon 1 (haven't done the second game yet)
>Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter remake (the demo)
>Superluminal (too bad it was too short and didn't experiment far enough on the puzzle concept)
Currently doing Hollow Knight Silksong and No Straight Roads. I'm also looking forward to Blade Chimera, Labyrinth of the Demon King and Touhou Artificial Dream in Arcadia.

Speaking of obscure indie games: write reviews.
You may or may not know this already, but until a game reaches 10 reviews, its basically invisible on Steam, it doesn't appear in recommendations and so on.
So, especially when you play a game that has less than 10 reviews, try to post one. If you don't feel like writing an essay, just type "fun game" or something. Doesn't even need to be positive. Even a negative review is probably better than nothing, since it counts just the same.
Your review does matter: it gives +10% towards the goal of 10 reviews.

Based take on Slay the Spire. People act like it’s some endlessly deep roguelike but once you beat the heart and see how narrow the viable deck paths are, the illusion falls apart fast. It’s Diet Strategy for people who think β€œdraw 5 cards every turn” is galaxy brain.
Also with you on Isaac. The second I saw "trinkets that do nothing until you get 10 of them and maybe they combine into something random" I noped again. Roguelike bloat is out of control, devs think adding 1000 passive items = replay value.

Pretty weak as well. My expectation was that it would ramp up to some "summon exodia" bonkers shit like that. Instead is just the poker mechanics becoming less and less important as you play replaced with just getting the right jokers.

Also bonus, Noita.
It's the best one of the other I named, but still feel like an half-finished game.
Everything outside the 'main' dungeon is lacking in content (while being obtuse to hide this). The wand-making is a lot less exciting than what it looked like at the start, machinegun-wands are too OP. The game is designed to be broken, but when you do you are left with something easy and tedious.

For sure. The combat's automated like Dominions. Honestly, I haven't played too much of it so I can't speak on how its mechanics play compare to Dominions, but since you're also dealing with far fewer units and commanders, the midgame likely doesn't devolve into plotting the movements of a gorillion units across the entire map. Plus, the game itself prides itself on having each game take only about an hour to beat or something, so that also tells you it's more beginner-friendly.

Arguably, it's more of a gateway into Dominions proper than Conquest of Elysium, but with anime girls.
