Depends.
Does the Steam version have Denuvo or some ancient kind of DRM? If that's the case I'll either buy from GOG or pirate from GOG.
Does the Steam version come without DRM or only feature the easily bypassed Steamworks DRM? If so I'll buy from Steam.

Both end up DRM-free on my machine anyway thanks to Goldberg.

GOG and I'm a shill but I also realize GOG has various problems, the most unfortunate being devs who don't update their GOG versions in a reasonable amount of time compared to the Steam versions.

So GOG is perhaps generally best for patient gamers who buy some time after the release date. Nevertheless, I appreciate those who support competition to Steam and client free options (also like Zoom Platform or Fire Flower games)

Anons make a massive stink over GOG and how they own games and stuff but do they actually DO anything with that? You own the game vs a liscense through steam but does that do anything significant for you as a consumer as in you resell or create copies for friends or it gives some other benefit? Im asking mainly because it seems like anons are hopping on this forced bandwagon because it makes them look cool to other anonymous internet shitposters.

There are virtually no nu-games on GOG though. I was extremely surprised they allowed Silksong to be on their platform, or that the Silksong devs wanted to release on GOG at all.
GOG tried to be open to indie developers in the 2010s, only to go "I akshually changed my mind, fuck off everyone" in the 2020s.

I dont think GOG will ever be able to compete with steam because they arent fighting for the same market. Steam sells you fuck tons of any games you want on constant discount, GOG sells you old games that have been gussied up to run on modern hardware. Also GOG is really, REALLY bad at actually doing buisness based on their previous financial reports.

They sell new games too, it's just that many devs and publishers don't want to bother because GOG is so small compared to Steam.

Its not that GOG is small, its that they dont want DRM. And despite what anons try to convince you Steam isnt involved in if a game has DRM or not, soulless corporate boomers who think piracy is a major contributor to losing sales do. I dont doubt that a large reason GOG sees so few new releases is that they have developed an image of being an enabler for piracy among publishers because they cant rape your PC with the latest DRM.

I'd have got Silksong on GOG if it wasn't in my duped GayPiss Ultijew account that I paid 1 dollar for (the account that was duped) in 2019. I love unlimited free rental services like GamePass. I'm a lead architect for IT infrastructure at a government agency so they're all SAS HDDs (helium) or thicc boi SSDs (kioxia). And that is usable storage after redundancy. They're not rack mounted exactly. My wife designed a wall mounted HDD chassis to house them, So they're all in 3 rows with Noctua IPPC 3k RPM fans blowing across them. They come in to a bunch of HBAs and connect over dual 10Gb SFPs to our switch. Unraid server with a 3950X and a couple of Intel ARC GPUs for transcoding and such. Our emby server is baller. Can stream anywhere in the world over own VPN with a web proxy. Have 5 Gigabit fiber internet at home with no data cap. We have a huge chunk of the zLibrary ripped to it too, but I need more storage to fit it all while there are still mirrors online. About 100TB is just high quality HDR/Dolby Vision media with a minimum of 5.1 uncompressed audio. Important level of quality since we have OLEDs and an Atmos setup in the livingroom/bedroom.

Your access to online content can, and eventually will be, taken away. Case in point, Steam recently removing hundreds of games from the storefront due to pressure from payment processors. By having a local backup of your online purchases, you retain access to your digital property without relying on a third party. GOG doesn't need to offer anything more than that for it to reflect the greater value, at least so far as single-player games are concerned. Maybe you don't care enough about losing your games for any of that to matter, or more likely you're just a shill looking to muddy the waters talking about "forced bandwagons", but for me it's enough reason to buy my games from another storefront.

Oh my FUCKING GOD SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT PHYSICAL MEDIA ALREADY
The real enemy is DRM and physicaltards like you are either paid shills distracting from that or retards who fell for it. Consoles have been proprietary DRMboxes since the fucking NES. The console can refuse to play "your" physical disc just like it can refuse to play "your" digital purchase. The medium the bits are stored on doesn't matter for shit if there's DRM attached. PC is the only platform where you can truly own your games either by cracking them, pirating them or buying from GOG.

When Sony turns off PSN most of your games will stop working, when the PS5 dies your games are vapor thanks to the on-disc DRM, and when they begin to ROT in 10 years they're gone. My GOG games will exist for as long as civilization exists and I live. I have two off-site backup servers too at my mother-in-law's house and my sister's house. you can often get games cheaper on pc though, either through isthereanydeal, grey market, or piracy, depending on how much you want to give devs the middle finger. that adds up if you play a lot of games but if you stick to a small handful that you just keep coming back to, that doesn't matter as much.

Steam because while I like GOG's ethics, they get second class support for updates, DLC, and mods. The convienience factor of steam is nice too. I can add a gog .exe to the steam library of course but installing games manually from the folder is a little annoying in this day and age.

Usually Steam, but through Fanatical's deals, as I prioritize what's cheapest. I do occasionally buy on GOG though, just to support them.

I want to like GOG, but they really just don't have that many games. There's tons of games just not on GOG at all. Anythime I bring this up, people just got mad and say 'hur dur like multiplayer games.' But there's dozens of single player games just missing from GOG for no reason. Part of this is because of the no DRM and publishers getting scared. Part of it is because Steam is so old and has games from like 2006 that GOG doesn't give a shit about to buy the rights to. Part of it is because GOG is fucking retarded and doesn't push developers to publish gakes on their site. Also, their preservation program is fucking retarded.

Steam, obviously. I gave GOG way more than a fair shake but they refuse to get their shit together.

if you ever complained about the current state of the gaming industry and not owning your games you have a moral obligation to yourself to buy from gog.

GOG carries new releases, and I’m pretty sure the defining factor is not whether GOG will β€œallow it”, but rather that the publisher will release the game on a storefront without DRM.

I'd rather not buy games from the company that while retarded enough to give out offline installers reserves the right to revoke all your licenses if you annoy someone on their forums.

There are lots of complaints from developers saying GOG flat out rejected their game.
I don't think it's about the developers. Lots of them are fine with releasing on itch.
