Still using ASUS Tuff & LG whatever, both are 1440p 16:9 144hz monitors, were $500 (bought in 2017). No problems with them at all (yet?). I've since bought 2 ultrawides which weren't as good for response time but decent enough. I have 2 of each since I used to live in 2 separate places for work and used the screens for work also.
I'm guessing I'll make a new build within 3 years, at which point I'm going to look for a good ultrawide, with all my current screens as backups/extensions.

Don't care. DLAA is good enough, in older games I'll just use dsr/dldsr. In most games at 1080p I'm only looking at a 10%-15% improvement going to a 5070ti or upwards to 30ish% going to a 5090.

I agree with the tv route, look at the PG27UCDM apparently the best OLED monitor out there. But people that bought it and compare it to their OLED TVs think it looks worse. QD OLED should look better than the C4/5s WOLED but that isn't the case because it's a computer monitor that has to make compromises. Get a 42 inch OLED TV and save a couple hundred bucks for something that is better than any monitor.

1440p
1ms
165hz
VA Panel (this is likely the weakest part about it)
Curved (also subjectively bad but i don't mind)
$199.99 when i bought them.
all i needed to do was drop the backlight down to about 15% to significantly reduce backlight bleed then adjust the red down a bit so colors are 255/255/245 and been golden ever since.

Got it for an amazing sale last year. Only paid $140 for it, which is less than I paid for my old 1080p monitor.
4k is really the only way to escape the awful dithered hair and greasy smear of games now. I still keep my 1080p screen around to play a couple old games which do not scale to 4k well at all.
Also have a 1440p monitor lying around but was kinda unimpressed; it seems like the worst of both worlds compared to 1080p and 4k.

I'm also on 1080p and I feel like I don't understand how not to be. All these new monitors with high refresh rates are requiring you to be on 1080p to get those refresh rates. In some games the aliasing is kinda bad, especially modern titles where MSAA doesn't work so good, but I'm mostly playing older games that actually utilize the high refresh rate anyway.
>>719983619 (OP)
I should probably check for burn in because I've made the mistake of leaving my screen on a static image overnight a few times now. I do think the babysitting aspect sucks when people still talk of that as you being moronic for doing the wrong thing. But I'll have to pull up the slides.

There's more uses for 240hz then you're aware of. Situational thing. Certain games run better than others and there other uses for high refresh rates that i can't explain to you other than it can be used in combination with certain applications to reduce motion blur.

Whats the point of these images? Yes, I know if I buy an OLED it might not last as long as my regular monitors if I don't take really good care of it. have you seen an OLED screen in person? For me the difference is night and day in a game like QuakeWorld. Even on a lower refresh rate, the blur of a fast moving player is super reduced compared to other panel types.
>>720008532
HDR is a meme. It's treated as such by most developers. If you calibrate your monitor in windows it may still not be enough for some games and require more fiddling around with. Sometimes the HDR implementations need to fixed entirely by using Reshade, which is unreliable garbage because i couldn't get it to work properly sometimes. RTX HDR still isn't apparently doing the correct thing either.
There's nothing particularly important about HDR and you should just play your games in SDR because of it being a meme.

1080p makes it easier to achieve stable high framerates in vidya. Even flagship GPUs still struggle with 4K vidya, and 1440p isn't really enough of a jump to be worth the expense.
Also I use 3 monitors so upgrading them all gets pricey, and have mismatched resolutions among them is not ideal.
There's also less support from video content for 4K, and almost none for 1440p.

Inferior to naively displaying a game at a set resolution with where you don't get artifacts and inconsistencies from upscaling bullshit. 1080p with subpixel info actually rendered well is easily good enough for any detail games give you.

Yes, every game should run at a stable 120FPS or higher. That isn't always possible but if I can't hit 120 at 1080p then it would be even worse at 1440p or 4K.
DLSS/FSR/etc all introduce ghosting and other artifacts. Dropping below native resolution to run a game is eye cancer and largely defeats the purpose of having the higher resolution display to begin with.

4K with DLSS look better than 1080p native by a fucking mile. I played Cyberpunk with PT at 4K Performance (1080p) and never noticed any difference between 4K native and DLSS Perf besides DISTANT details and detail behind mesh fences looking off while moving fast. The rest of the game looked the same.
Also changing the actual res to 1440p have literally no cons on a 4K display unless you're talking about very small fonts such as 16px but no game have such small fonts.

I can tell you have never actually had a 4K display. You can integer scale 1080p on a 4K display thats literally pixel perfect scaling. And 1440p looks more than fine, still better than 1080p native thanks to the DPI.
Get a 4K monitor and come back. You wont because you're poor and probably have no good return policies like we do in first world countries.

A CoolerMaster GP27U (4k 27", 160Hz, HDR1000 with like 1200+ nits in practice). It's kind of alright, the HDR looks nice and punchy, comes with all the advantages and disadvantages of local dimming LCD tech. I think the local dimming in SDR mode also does a very good job. I would love to buy something with no disadvantages but display technology is fucking ass and everything sucks in major, deal-breaker ways so you just gotta pick your poison so that's what I did.
I want to say that I'll upgrade when some new tech comes around, but that's probably so far in the future I'll end up upgrading to some other compromised product that's incrementally better in some ways (higher refresh, brightness, more dimming zones and so on) but still doesn't get rid of any fundamental flaws that are actually hard to address.

It looks great when it works properly, but doing it "properly" is difficult and somewhat nebulous, it's definitely not a "toggle option and enjoy" sort of thing. What it actually does is improve contrast and color range, which just looks better. That doesn't really explain what it really does though, what it does is more like it enables actual differences in brightness to be shown.
If you're in SDR and want to display a white light bulb and a white piece of paper in the same image, all you can do is display both as white which ends up in the same brightness. That's obviously stupid, a light bulb should be much brighter than a piece of paper, but SDR cannot do it beyond just displaying the paper as a shade of grey rather than white. This is what HDR fundamentally fixes. HDR can display the light as white with fuck-high brightness while the paper is white with much lower brightness.
It is hard to explain what this looks like on a screen, but it's a major upgrade when done well. In real life all sorts of things and areas are at different brightness. Seeing some emulation of this on a screen makes it look a lot more natural and for lack of a better word, it makes the display of light in a scene much more plausible and better defined. Like if you've got a bright summer scene with mid-day sun but also some shade, it actually kinda looks like it does IRL. The day looks bright while the shadows are darker but still clearly visible and well lit. You just can't do this sort of shit with SDR, you cannot properly represent "bright sun" in SDR in any way that is actually similar to bright sun IRL.

Anything else gets upscaled or downscaled. 4k is a meme because you need a fuckton of money and the absolute latest hardware to actually get 4k. Most 4k movie transfers looks like shit. You can go look on capsaholic for instance. Colors always looks like shit compared to bluray. Since i use my monitor for games and movies i like to have something that actually looks good. Therefore i have a VA 1080p monitor. If you have the money you can get a monitor solely for gaming with 1440p but i dont have that kind of money and it seems like a waste. 1440p is a meme resolution.
