at first i really didn't want to charge people too much but i kept increasing my prices under the logic that i really would rather be doing anything else so the more i get for comms the less of them i have to draw

The thing with a lot of subscription services is that many customers just don't get around to unsubscribing. They have a credit card, their finances are stable enough that a $5-10 monthly charge goes unnoticed, and they end up just drip feeding money to that service for months or even years before something else prompts them to audit their spending and they find it again and cancel.

Happens all the time with stuff like patreon, netflix, gamepass, etc. It's part of why patreon is such a great grift. If the patreon system -required- that patrons log in each month and make a manual donation instead of having it charged to their card automatically, most of these projects would die pretty fast because people sign up for these things and then forget about them.

it's also just a good way to build a healthy customer base. the people who are really happy with your comms will be repeat customers and will also be more likely to purchase goods from you like prints.

however, there is actually some logic to just charging more for commissions. as >>720004662 points out, increased prices doesn't necessarily translate to lower sales. a lot of customers will actually perceive a higher price point as an indicator that the product itself is better. obviously if you go crazy and ask 10k for a thirty minute sketch you're unlikely to sell anything, but a lot of artists actually shoot themselves in the foot by undercharging - not only in less revenue per sale, but also because they actually get fewer sales overall if prices are too low.

The funniest thing is that AI really isn't all that much of a threat to your average online digital artist. Most of them have either built up a dedicated following over years from people who like their specific art style and will support them through whatever means or draw things so hyper specific that AI could not possibly replicate it (like in the case of porn). Go to any convention and people still buy tons of prints, keychains, stickers, etc. if they like their style from artists. The only area where AI would really impact is people who work as concept or commercial artists, which is a field already full of people tracing shit from shutterstock anyway.
