I'm really not a fan of varlamore and zeah. I wish they'd flesh out the mainline (like finishing the desert) instead of spending time making another big empty continent.

There's a handful of staff in jagex for music
Some flip back and forth between os and rs3 (Ash, Surma, though Ash is basically the guy who can do everything and knows everything at Jagex)
Some are temporary contracts (Artur)

I'm generally a fan of the questing in the game over everything, and I think Varlamore's questing wasn't their best
Kourend's as a whole for quests was pretty bad but I can chalk them up to early OS devs getting the hang of them
The side quests in Varlamore were better than the main one
But the activities and content in the region itself on the other hand are incredible
The only content I didn't have fun with was the agility course (it's just a rooftop), and mixology (the Aldarin music turned it into a chill weekend grind)

Zeah/Kourend was embarrassingly bad empty and ugly content on release but after almost a decade of fixing it and finally tearing out the Favor system last year it's pretty "okay" now, even if everything is still too big and you need three different kinds of fast travel to get around it.
Varlamore has been great though, every area is easily accessible and has a clear and useful purpose. It's still pretty spread out but it's only like half the size of Zeah and it's room to add more things in the future.

Once Sailing releases in the next few weeks/months attention will probably be going back to the mainland. They already announced the finale to the Vampire quests early next year, and I would bet we're getting Menaphos in the second half of 2026 now that it's finally been added to the map (and RS3 just did their big event finishing their Desert questline).

It's good but Kourend's problem is that it has little else going on. I'm curious as to what the plan is with the three (presuming, I'm only certain about one) kingkillers hanging around outside the capital. Hopefully they start adding more once off quests to it and fleshing out the NPCs there.

You'll probably have fun, but if you end up liking the game then membership is inevitable. Free to play is tiny and devoid of mid-to-high level content. Back in the day you either convinced your parents to buy you membership or you'd spend your days pking, but the current state of free to play pvp is woeful if you're not on your 8th alt account because the only people who pk anymore are minmaxed autists and a handful of genuinely maxed mains.

The F2P experience up to completing Dragon Slayer and earning your first set of Rune armor is classic
At that point you've basically completed the demo and should buy membership to actually play the game, there's nothing left in F2P for you unless you're severely autistic. It's possible to buy membership with in-game gold but nobody should ever do this in F2P, the best reliable F2P moneymakers are like 300k/hr tops (that is fifty (50) hours to earn a bond) and are all extremely monotonous low-level skilling/processing and heavily contested by bots.

what aspect of the game seems too complicated?
even the highest levels of pvm can be boiled down to "click the mage prayer icon when the boss starts doing magic things, and don't stand in the FUCKYOU zone", it's only really pvp where things start getting somewhat complicated (autistic)

You could consider it as paying for the game as a once off and using that one year subscription to stock up enough in game cash to buy bonds once the subscription ends.

Dragon Slayer was the traditional F2P right of passage but honestly the grind for it isn't worth it when you have better options if you're planning on buying membership anyway.

most of the members seem to be around the mid-midhigh level range so its understandable, but im torn between leaving and finding a new clan with more """""serious""""" players to do content i want to do or sticking with this one because they all seem rather relaxed and there's no drama or anything going on

If you're running around doing clues or something it's pretty unlikely you'll run into anyone who wants to kill you, PKers mostly stick to hotspots and hop through worlds until they find someone.
Crazy Archeologist isn't a money printer boss so people probably aren't camping it, but you could run into someone running to/from the Chaos Altar or just some dickhead out to harass ironmen doing the boss.
Whenever you're doing anything in the Wilderness the rule is to just not risk anything you don't want to lose/can't easily replace. Check the "items lost on death" screen on your equipment menu before you go out, it will tell you exactly what happens to your items and equipment if you get PK'd. You take your three best options and everything else is cheap and replaceable.

At Crazy Archeologist, ideally you'd have a teleport ready to click as soon as you see a PKer. But it's just above Level 20 Wilderness, so you'd need to either do MM2 for Royal Seed Pods, have dragonstone jewelry teleports (Ring of Wealth?) or Slayer Rings. Otherwise you have to run south through the ruins before you can teleport out, which makes it more dangerous. Also, make sure you don't bring and risk your whole stack of runes, just bring enough for a few kills per trip.
If you want to get more comfortable in the Wilderness and get some supplies first, you should do the Medium Wilderness Diary and practice by killing Zombie Pirates at the Chaos Temple. They have an absolutely fucking stupid drop table and you can easily get 200k+ in alchs and Blighted supplies in ten minutes with just a Dragon scimitar and strength ammy. You're also likely to see a PKer every few minutes and you're permanently teleblocked by the Chaos druids while you're there, but it's only in Level ~10 Wilderness so the lesson is to stay alert and manage your risk (only bring the supplies you need and don't get greedy, leave and bank your loot) and be prepared to run/survive until you can reach the ditch and escape.

RS3 has expanded F2P substantially over the years
OSRS has thrown F2P a few bones with some new content and making things more bearable in general over the years, but I think there isn't any real interest/motive on the OSRS side to actively cater to the F2P audience when 1) F2P is generally seen as an adequate demo for the full P2P game and 2) unlike in RS3, there is no "alternative" monetization to push F2P players toward (except for directly buying gold through bonds), so they have every reason to maximize the value of a subscription and little reason to make anyone more comfortable in F2P

They could definitely be a little less stingy though, the Imcando Hammer (the only reason to go through the whole Camdozaal grind) being a Members item feels like a cruel joke

Because fuck you
Wintertodt feels like a stupid amount of EXP but it's actually significantly slower than normal Firemaking, you can get 300k/hr burning Yews and 500k/hr burning Redwoods. Of course it's still a million times better to do Wintertodt because you don't have to gather/buy the resources and actually profit with tons of useful resources in return.
The best Runecrafting methods in the game cap out at around 100k/hr at Level 85+, so GOTR giving you roughly 2/3rds of the best rates at each pouch bracket is comparable to Wintertodt's rates for Firemaking. With the benefits of not having to gather/buy resources, not having to run to altars and generally "not having to actually do Runecrafting" while still getting tons of "free" runes and the best skilling outfit in the game, it's pretty worthwhile.
