There's this unfinished tower in Venezuela that's similar to Kowloon, in that it was basically it's own little world of poverty and filth crammed together inside a single mega-structure. People would drive through the unlit hallways on motorcycles to get from one location to another. Authorities can't evict anyone from it because the population is heavily armed and don't allow anyone near its base. It's a final dungeon in everything but name.

the antennas are placed close together (less than half a wavelength apart)
the phase and amplitude of the current for each antenna can be controlled individually
with this set up, you can reproduce any wave passing through an aperture the size of your array (by holographic principle)
you can create any beam pattern and electronically steer it quickly, no moving parts

It's pretty far from my favorite architectural style, it deserves a lot of shit given how popular it was for a while. Most attempts were shit.
Everyone brings up the FBI headquarters- yes it's very ugly and boring to look at.
HOWEVER- it's still far more interesting than the millions of classless mcmansions or even the vast majority of American Craftsman style homes that populate most of the country.
There are even a few examples that I think are very nice.

Bell System is the old telephone company that had basically a total monopoly on the telephone service in the US for decades. They owned the lines, owned the equipment, and only rented out actual phones- 'Ma Bell' as they called it had their fingers out every step of the way, and also had a massive employee base and territory span so everyone knew someone who worked for the Bell. They were eventually broken up by the government into a buncha smaller companies, 'baby Bells,' which have over the years merged back together anyway into companies almost as big as the original anyway. There's a whole separate rabbit hole about the telecom company buildings that have FBI offices on the same floor.

the telephone exchange hardware used to have to operate in a very narrow window of environmental conditions. now they don't, so these buildings are quite literally mostly empty. the lack of windows also offers some level of security against weather or direct attacks, and because they also handle government calls and international calls, they need to be as secure as possible. there's a building just like this in my city, though not nearly as big, but it also doesn't have any windows and is owned by century link.

so the crystals can go back to growing
they need mineral-rich water to continue and the cave was dry for 15 years while it was being explored and studied
15 years was plenty of time for us to look over every nook and cranny, take plenty of pictures and then let the crystals go back to what they were doing
it's also coincidentally ideal to prevent random shitheads from going in and fucking up a bunch of crystals that have been growing for over 1 million years (official estimate based on growth rates divided by size)

No, now that you mention it, cutting a hole into the middle of a grate is the alternative to cutting a hole between an intersection of two grates, and the hole in the middle of a grate would make the individual grate more likely to bend than if it were two separate grates with just part of their sides cut out.

It looks like there's two strong beams on either side below them in either case, I'm sure it's plenty sturdy.

Anon, literally everyone makes this inference about these projects and yet I've never seen a compelling case that any of them were intended as a means of defacing these buildings.
Yes it's ugly, but no one really goes into architecture, gets a 4 year degree, wins a contract, and begins a multi year building process with the sole intention of ruining a building.

For their own careers if nothing else!

If you want to make an observation about the politics of modern architecture- it's that current governors, mayors, statesmen have political considerations about who wins contracts, about who is employed to carry them out, regulations about materials and methods used, labor costs, etc, that causes good architects to not be selected and/or forces them into a situation where they just don't have the means to build what they want.
