Ehhh. It had some great set pieces, and some nice story moments, but it's still just boostshit. Play a level once, and you've played it a million times. The sub-stages are even more obvious in this regard, and mostly 2D too, which people conveniently forget while they're glazing this game. They're also Forces-tier short, a lot of the time.

That's not a high bar, first of all, secondly, the level design is still mostly the same hallway slop we've been getting since Forces and Frontiers' Cyber Space stages. There are moments where the levels open up, but they're far too brief. I also didn't care for the Doom power gimmick very much. It just doesn't feel very Sonic-like. I would've preferred more Chaos based powers, since that's more in line with Shadow's character. Daddy Doom powers just seem like edgy Wisps.

I honestly had more fun fucking around the white world than I did with the actual stages, and that should tell you something. Assuming you're not an overly emotional autist who cooms over the game purely because of Shadow, which I suspect is the majority of the people who blow their knees out sucking off Shadow Gens. I get it, it's pure fanservice like Generations was, and SA2: Battle was your first Sonic game, but you can be at least a little critical of it, I think.

Frontiers I will disagree with. Its an interesting tech demo, but it did not come together as a cohesive game.

Shadow Generations was great and will give you that.

Crossworlds has a lot of potential but the price is a bit high for what it is and I am worried about the player base dropping off a cliff. I did like what I played with the demo.

Also Sonic Superstars was trash. I know it was developed by Arzest who has a shit track record, but still.

Frontiers was just as mediocre and flawed as Kishimoto's other games.
Shadow Gens was directed by one of the main designers who worked on Generations (funnily, another game not directed by Kishimoto).
Crossworlds is largely being done by Initial D devs, iirc. Sonic Team is just supervising and providing assets, like with pretty much every game they don't directly work on.

The next Sonic game will be directed by Kishimoto again, so there's no reason to expect it to be anything more than fundamentally flawed in several areas it shouldn't be. Again.
That's just the nature of this IP. The quality Jap devs move on to work on more Japanese-relevant franchises, while the mediocre/good enough devs stick around on Sonic. Thus, a never-ending roller coaster of quality.

Frontiers is alright but it's not good. Most of the cyberspace stages are copy pasted from other games so it can't give them credit for a majority of them sine they're just taking better stages from other games and shoving them in. Final horizon is actually awful for the most part, like it's cool to use knuckles and tails again after so long but man this shit was boring. I can't even say cyberspace was better in final horizon because they rely on you knowing you can spindash which nothing in the game ever tells you you can do, and even if you figure out it works in the over world there's no reason to assume it does in cs since no other skills do. Atleast frontiers made sonic actually cool again in the boss fights, while I didn't hate the writing in colors as much as other people do sonic hasn't been cool since unleashed, sucks Ian's dialog fucks that up even more than pontiff did but he doesn't talk during the bosses so I guess that's a plus sorta. Still this is the only sonic game I played where at some point I just wanted it to hurry up and end, and the open world fucking sucked despite that being the main advertising point of the game.

The GBA's screen is always going to be 240x160, but it's faster cpu clock lets it run more code. I think it's capable of everything the Super-FX chip was, but I'm not certain.
