Especially since the short amount of lead time allowed by review codes is barely enough to thoroughly examine any decent game. To be fair, I don't necessarily see anything wrong with early review copies (other than spoilers potentially leaking early). Just like I don't see anything wrong with withholding those. It's just two different takes on the issue, neither is objectively better or worse than the other.
As the article mentions Team Cherry say, that this way of doing things is more "fair" to the players. Sending out review copies could be beneficial to players as well, because a lot of people still rely on reviews when making purchase decisions.
