After having replayed these one after the other recently I still think Emerald and BW2 are the best so far. FRLG is whatever, it's ok but very barebones as a remake, HGSS felt overrated compared to what I remember but were still extremely solid. Platinum was the big let down, especially coming in with the expectations of "everyone agrees this is one of the best games". BW1 were surprisingly very good compared to what I remember.

Overall I'd say Emerald/BW2>HGSS~=BW1>Platinum>=FRLG

Moving onto the 3D games next starting with Y and hopefully they're better than what I remember.

Those are my teams now that I've basically done everything I felt was worth doing in each game. So it's all the post game stuff basically that got them there.

So the gym leader rematches and Steven in Emerald
Sevii Island and E4 rematch in Fire Red
Gym Leader Rematches/Red in Soul Silver
The battle resort stuff and the 20 fucking Elite 4 rematches you need to do to get the final Barry fight in Platinum
Eastern Unova and E4 rematches in White 1
And all the post game like White Treehollow in White 2(challenge mode as well)

When I bred my competitive mons for the battle frontier/pwt/etc on the right I leveled them up by giving them exp share and going through things like the elite 4 as well so they got extra levels that way

BW2 not having a Battle Frontier and still being called one of the best games in the series is one part of a telling point that lots of Pokemon fans don't seem to really talk about.

To me the PWT is weird as a post game battle facility since unlike say the Battle Towers of previous games or even just the Battle Subway of Unova you know what the enemy teams are gonna be to an extent. If you see you're up against Morty then you know you're gonna be fighting ghost type mons. If your team is built well enough to counter a specific regions teams then the enemies in that tournament will be super easy. Same for champs. The only time that's not as applicable is the World Leaders one since you're facing off against like like 46 potential opponents, so even with the overlapping types it's trickier to be ready for all of them.

Point is that you're not gonna be getting thrown off by the enemy having a bullshit random legendary or being suspicious the AI is cheating when a perfect hard counter gets thrown your way.

And yet it's still completely beloved as a feature. But why? And to that note, despite it being so beloved as a feature, how many of you can actually say you've even beaten it? Or have gotten all three trophies from the battle subway? To answer the first part I think the biggest thing comes from just the presentation. The PWT is presented as some big grand thing so it hypes you up even if the actual content leaves something to be desired. You're facing off against gym leaders from every game in the series, who cares if their teams are ass. Who cares if the champs aren't all that tough, you're fighting Red from KANTOOOO.

That's one of the big reasons people love the battle frontier in Emerald, because each facility is unique and fun and the frontier brains have cool designs so even if you haven't beaten it(and let's face it lots of us haven't) you still appreciate it being there.

That's why I feel like ORAS gets both deserved hate and undue hate(cont. next post)

In ORAS all you have is the Battle Resort which is just a copy paste job of the Battle Maison from XY. It's juts a battle tower clone again with 4 different modes. On its own it's fun enough but having the expectations of a battle frontier really hung over ORAS' head. I have to ask how many people even completed the battle maison in XY or ORAS yet still complained about lack of battle frontier.

All of this spiel is just to say that while battle frontiers and gimmicky battle facilities aren't really necessary for a Pokemon game to be good, their inclusions need to be presented well. Battle Maison could have worked if they just spiced it up a little.

Add in more than just the single/double/triple/rotation modes. Hell, the PWT had that and I doubt people did more than just the standard singles.

Presentation really goes a long way in these games.

Also another thing I feel is important that people always call out in terms of Pokemon game quality is the region. People give BW1 shit for being linear but people love BW2 despite it basically being just as linear. You're not really doing things out of order but the way you progress through the towns is different enough from BW1 that it feels very unique.

Personally, the only reason I prefer replaying Emerald, Platinum, or BW2 over stuff like the Battle Subway in BW, USUM, or Crystal’s Battle Tower is because of the Battle Factory or the rental option in the PWT. Yeah I was gonna mention the factory. The gimmick of not even using your own mons is pretty cool, but it always felt to me like just a slight rebrand of the tower anyway. There's no gimmick to it other than the mons you use are from a random selection. It and the Battle Tower being the only two consistent ones between both versions of the Battle Frontier kind of shows that.

Agreed. Fucking Scarlet/Violet don't have a post game battle tower equivalent at all. The only thing you can really do is the Paldean Star Tournament or inviting people in the League Club Room but you need the DLC for that. And again that's just the same as the PWT where you know who the enemies are.

I always loved rotation battles. Only part of the PWT I ever really cared about. Rental rotation battles are great.
I will say, one thing about the PWT that's good is that you get access to it before the post game, but one thing that sucks is that they force you through, it in typical gen 5 Fashion. I think Pokestars and PWT would be a lot more appreciated if you weren't forced to sit through long obnoxious ads for them.
