Almost everything about it has appeal. I even came to enjoy the way the limited textures made levels blend together.
It lacks challenge though, your arsenal grows too fast and the AI can't keep up.
The tank levels are bad.

I played on hard with tactical, only the first handful of levels were hard at all, before you get your arsenal going. Well, if you play it tactiicaly that is - if you run around Doom-style it would be a lot harder.
Beyonds final levels were made utterly trivial with the hookshot alt-fire. The tool is fun but the levels need to be designed around it, which they aren't at all.

Go figure. You don't just mash the reload button. You've got a dedicated key for unloading magazines, a dedicated key for loading a magazine, and then a dedicated key for cocking/pumping your gun to eject/chamber a round. You can just hit r to reload but then you drop the magazine on the ground which can potentially break said magazine (plus you need to manually pick it back up even if it doesn't break). Ideally with magazine fed weapons you want to get in the habit of hitting the unload key to stash the magazine into your loader belt then hit the reload key to pop in a fresh one then cock it if needed. It actually does a pretty great job of adding an extra level of immersion without fucking up the pacing of combat.
Also the dedicated cocking button lets you do cool shit with some weapons. For example if you hold down the fire button while repeatedly hitting the cocking key when using the snub nose or the pump shotty you'll fan the revolver's handle/slamfire the shotgun.
