The Saturn was really cooking with that game that the later ports failed to mimic a lot of its assets. The sequels are fine from what I hear since they came out on more popular systems. Never got around to playing the sequels though.

Its just harder to draw and takes longer to draw. Even worst to animate because it also costed more. The demand got bigger so the designs got more simpler to same time and cost. A lot of drawfags would often complain about how hard it was to mimic those 90's artstyles by hand and they were doing it for free on their own time. Its the same for art and animation around the world, not just Japanese.

When the demand got bigger old tradition were thrown out because the newer market didn't care what their shit looked liked so long as they got their shit.

The Saturn version would have extra details like shadows and fog and such that the PS1 port removes and the PC port is a port of the PS1 game but smeared in shit. Normally losing some details like shadows isn't too big of a deal in some game but this game was big on its grand adventure feeling. The environments and scenery were pretty impressive for this game.

Good call. Mednafen or SSF should do the trick for Saturn emulation, though you might have to wrestle with settings a bit. Totally worth it for the atmospheric lighting and that crisp pixel art. Makes a huge difference in how the world pulls you in, especially on those sweeping overworld shots. Just be ready to deal with 90s load times and some questionable voice acting.
