The Liberal government in Canada had to back off forcing EV sales because the vehicles are rapidly losing popularity. The grid wouldn't support everyone owning one, and they are functionally garbage in cold weather because the range gets halved due to the batteries being unable to hold a charge as well at lower temperatures.
Places that wouldn't have the battery issue like California still couldn't handle the increased demand on the electric grid.
Environmental nuts that want EVs aren't willing to let Nuclear plants be built that could actually support the cars, either, so it's all a wash.
Furthermore they're not affordable, on average costing $10k more than an equivalent gas powered vehicle.

Nah, the Canadian government dumped billions into subsidizing companies to build EV's in Canada and they all bailed because it's garbage business. The fact that China is pumping out EVs that nobody is buying only makes the market even less attractive.
Forgot to mention the used market for EVs is a joke, too. The batteries have a 10 year life span, only an idiot buys a car that's lost 50% of it's range and requires a 10k investment for a new battery to fix it.
Hydrogen Cell vehicles might be cool but I don't think EV's are it.

EVs in their current form are like CFL light bulbs. There will be a replacement for ICE vehicles at some point, but it won't be the current tech people are using. You either need a breakthrough new battery technology or some alternative fuel source like hydrogen or some sort of biofuel. I think audi was working on some tech, but god knows what the timeline is for mass market production.
I really love the Rivian design language and I think they do make good vehicles, but nobody can fucking afford them. Im sure if chinese EVs were sold for 25k, people would buy them, but the only reason why they would be sold for so cheap is for China to completely decimate and then control the western auto market. They will (and already are) subsidizing these companies.

Enthusiast here. Solid-state batteries are supposed to be the miracle cure. Compared to lithium ion batteries, solid-state
>can store twice as much energy in the same weight
>can charge almost instantly
>CAN'T randomly catch on fire
It'd solve so many problems at once. The weight difference would make electric planes viable. The cynic in me says they won't make phones and laptops that last twice as long and instead will make ones that are half as thin.
The problem is that solid-state batteries have been five years in the future, for like twenty years now. I'm looking at an old press release from Toyota flexing that they'd have their solid-state EVs on the market by 2022.
The chinks have something called "semi-solid-state" that's gotta be an outright scam, just lithium ion with a Blast Processing Power of Cell sticker slapped on it.
As far as shit I view more credibly, Mercedes is flexing this week that they just drove a prototype solid-state EV 750 miles, at highway speed, on one charge. I believe the press about it and I also notice what they're not saying - I worry that they achieved this feat with a $2 million battery pack and it was ruined by the end of the journey.
Solid-state batteries do exist in one place, right now, in the real world. Pacemakers. It turns out nobody really cares that the button-sized battery costs $2,000 when it's a component of a $50,000 device being implanted in a $300,000 surgery. I get it.

lets say you have 100 crude units and it cost 20 energy to create 80 units. you have a decently high output. (80/100) (started with 100 now down to 80)
now lets say for creating hydrogen you have 100 units and it cost 60 energy to create hydrogen fuel units. you have now lost more from input to output. (40/100). (started with 100 now down to 40)
tldr. it cost more energy to make gas over hydrogen

They're not, at least not until you can do 1000 kilometers at 130km/h at -5ºC without recharging, because as far as I'm concerned, that's a common feature of an old diesel sedan.
The future right now and most probably in the nearest future are hybrid cars, since they offer the best middle ground between the two technologies and people can actually afford them, plus a battery replacement on a 2kW hybrid is like 2k for the battery, not 50k.

It will die off mainly because they are not sustainable long term. Average lifespan of modern car is roughly 4-5 years, same for electric car's battery, and electric cars build quality is usually trash, too, replacing components costs as much as car itself.
The grid argument is bullshit because there won't be enough power for it since nuclear energy is still taboo in many places. It's delusional to expect everything go fully electric in current day with all anti nuclear sentiment while gas and coal is still used for power.
>>720459752
>Places that wouldn't have the battery issue like California still couldn't handle the increased demand on the electric grid.
They would. EVs would suck in hot climate place because batteries can't handle heat, too. They'd get drained just as fast as in cold weather, not to mention, that EVs can't handle moisture well, too. If it's tropical climate place or place where it rains a lot, expect your electric trash to hiccup a lot.

Even with a power grid that can handle the loads, they just end up causing undesirable power loads that need to be balanced out by non-renewables. It doesn't fix the underlying issue of cars being inherently inefficient as mass transit and therefor really shit for commuting and long-distance hauling. Cars inherently perform dramatically better when fewer people are driving and parking.
>It's bigger than ever and it keeps expanding.
Combustion engine cars also kept expanding due to the same kinds of government overreach and subsidies that are enabling EVs, that doesn't mean it is sustainable, it just means that palms are being greased.

They just continually vote for the things that make them feel good. disgusting creatures that should have their voting rights revoked.

the US had thorium reactor technology in the 60s which is when they last considered swapping over. but thorium has a major problem with US leadership, which is that it can't be weaponized like uranium to create plutonium, which is the one real product that american nuclear plants are producing. electricity generation is only a side benefit to them. that's why they didn't switch the first time, and they never will. the US actually generates more electricity from renewables than from nuclear. if the US plans new reactors, it's to replace old ones that are slated for retirement. if they are actually expanding their reactor count, what that really means is that they're expanding their nuclear arsenal.
conversely, this is also why several european countries have been moving away from nuclear. they don't produce nuclear weapons so politically they're fine with ditching nuclear energy if that's what their voters want.

Nuclear weapons are not produced in large numbers anymore, you also don't need an NPP to transform uranium into a weapon you just need a refinery for that.
in reality Uranium mines are all owned by corporation and thorium can be easily created from recycled materials, so they make sure that governments never look into it and keep generating a maximum profit with the mines.
New generator technology still use uranium but will now use less of it as fuel than necessary while still generating even more energy, thorium is pushed aside for a reason and there's a solid hint showing it's all about money uranium generate, same reason why solar panels are shilled to the max by Oil producers

Corn is only popular in America. In Europe alcohol is made from wheat and triticale, since corn is extremely whimsical crop and generally needs more maintenance and the demand for it isn't as big. Triticale and wheat require less maintenance and it's extremely cheap to grow and harvest, while corn drains soil and needs optimal temperatures with good soil.
For alcohol it's more of same, all 3 are good for alcohol manufacturing outside the fact that wheat with triticale are generally cheaper to grow.

The only reason to "prefer" ICE slop is if you're living in a shithole that refuses to adopt them and improve the EV charging infrastructure (and battery swapping stations in the future) and you can't do anything to change your government's mind since your vote is worthless against the Chevron lobbies. So you cope that what you're stuck with is better lol.

Not even. The speedo in Cyberpunk applies a 'scaling factor' to your speed to make cars look faster than they really are. With a mod that fixes the speedometer, most cars struggle to hit 100 kph, and the Caliburn only hits 200 kph. You can use other mods to improve car performance, but then the game struggles to load objects in time if you actually maintain real speeds of 300 kph or more.

300+ replies and not a single post about the possibility of electric grids getting hacked or taken over by rogue AIs? Data krash already happened once and in 2077 the Netwatch and cannibalized Alt Cunningham are the only ones barely preventing another network collapse. Any mass outage means all vehicles dying in a matter of hours. Carrying portable generators and some fuel completely defeats the point of driving EVs in the first place, not to mention batteries and generator + fuel being ridiculously heavy. It has fuck all to do with real world technology and politics.

Oil industry won. Also an electric car takes over an hour to charge. Cyberpunk takes place after a technological collapse and it turns out that most people can't afford rent let alone a vehicle. Those that own one probably don't want to spend a long time charging their vehicles in a bad neighborhood which is more or less the entire city lol. Also its a Polish game with Polish values, so no perfect EV's.

Gasoline is still one of the most energy-dense forms of portable fuel. One would assume the imperfect combustion problem is solved in the future, so the engine exhausts nothing but CO2 and water. And on top of that, ""fossil"" fuels are easy to synthesize using fusion energy to power the process since it's literally just hydrogen (which is everywhere) and carbon (which is everywhere).

this
unless a renewable solution can phase out fossil fuels entirely and also be more efficient and be a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the cost, there is zero point in wasting time with shit like solar and wind, i would argue that hydroelectric needs to go aswell, as it also is a much bigger ecological disaster than fossil fuels ever will be
Nothing renewable can ever come close to the sheer output of things like coal, oil, or gasoline, they are absolutely vital to both the world's economy and have produce electricity at a pace that outstrips any benefit renewable energy can offer, even if we covered the entire planet+moon in solar panels and wind turbines for 100 years, it wouldn't match .0001% of what a single coal burning electric plant can produce in a single day

none of that is true
electric cars get to use regenerative braking so their pads and shoes last forever because they're used much less frequently. the extra weight is nothing to roads, that's not how that works. it's true electric cars pay an extra road wear tax on their tabs, but that's only because road work and repair pull heavily from gas taxes which electric car owners don't contribute so, so they're using the roads "for free" otherwise

Nigger, the issue for electric cars right now is that we don't have enough lithium for manufacturing. The reason you don't is because you just collect these webms and articles to cope, not to research with interest in EVs.
It's an evolving meta. Like how even the piece of shit Prius had to phase out NIMH batteries despite how cheapskate Toyota is.

My problem isn't necessarily with electric, it's that they want every car from now on to be electric, and more importantly, that they want every car made from now on to have features that would allow police to shut them off.
What next? Speed limiters based on geographic location? Automatic tolling based on roads you take? Mandatory always on dash cams that face both ways? Breathalyzers or CAPTCHAS before you start your car? Subscription services for heated seats? Ads and or Unskippable ads directly on your rinky dink fuckin bluetooth radio?
Legally the car is almost recognized as a house. The police can't search it without your consent or a warrant. And little by little we're letting it become more and more judaified.

Europe already has the technology for Geographically based speed capping. No idea how common it is but they have it.
Automatic tolling does exist, but I see them expanding it. And they're excuse will be that it'll go toward maintaining the roads.
Dash cams are a great idea, but they'll eventually be mandatory, and you probably won't even be able to access your own footage without some kind of special permission, and or it'll be used to spy on you, listen for slurs, target ads toward you, the usual.
My point is that the foot is in the door and that foot belongs to judeo-negrified bullshit.

Nope theyre actually not as annoying, they are significantly less annoying. Tired of this false equivalence. Some retard making something political or just generally spouting inane bullshit is not as annoying as people cutting their dicks off and grooming children and spreading physical and mental disease, nice try though. I noticed you casually tried to sneak that in and led up to it.
>ever notice how people complain about things?
>isnt complaining annoying and obnoxious?
>you know what else is obnoxious? TRANNIES
>so uhh like uhh those complainers are as bad as trannies!!
this is literally kindergartener logic. Fuck off.

I'm saying that people who buy new cars don't care if the car lasts a long time. They trade them in for new ones every few years.

It's literally safe horny for politics. Anything to do with conservation or the environment is a safe conservative position that people can go hard right on knowing they won't offend left wing sensibilities too much.

In order for that whole scheme to work the car needs to retain value. Which EVs do not because the batteries degrade, and the ones exposed to the elements degrade even faster.

In the setting fuel has become a renewable resource through genetically engineered corn. The megacorps not giving a shit about pollution is just in character for them, especially Arasaka whose leader literally hates America and wants to maximize the suffering of americans due to WW2.
Also I agree, having EVs would be pretty cool for Cyberpunk.

To be fair though, silent EV is pretty dangerous.
Having 1 ton of mass of steel moving at high speed constantly announcing its approach with loud noise is better than a silent mass of steel suddenly hitting you from behind while you just minding your own business on the sidewalk.
I read somewhere that a lot of EV manufacturer deliberately make their car emit artificial engine noise to avoid such case.

It's akin to saying horses are current tech. Except even dumber since horses are still being produced while these old batteries aren't and they were never produced in high numbers to begin with.
Also what little of them there are out there are getting rapidly replaced.
It's simply a dishonest tactic senpai. Your FUD is outdated.
