Alain is an über-tank and damage dealer that already works without any support. You can technically take whatever.
Yahna and Scarlett are really strong support characters that pair well with him. Scarlett might have been custom-made for him. Selvie technically as well, but her class is just good in any squad. The elfen sisters can also work, but I find they are better leading their own squads, as their start-on-battle abilities clash with his own. Chloe is also a good support that you can be flexible with.
A bit iffy are characters/classes that want to stand with him on the frontline and take damage/evade. Which can mean that he doesn't need to protect them. Like Virginia, Berengaria and Yunifi. Also strong classes that can work leading their own squads and can have clashing start-on-battle abilities.
Another option is a knigth frontline together with a sainted knight. However, both Miriam and Monica are meh maidens
But ultimately, you can make anything work.

I played on the hardest difficulty that you can select at the beginning, and it's incredibly easy. I don't like "Tactics" games, I'm just an RPG vet, and there are some incredibly busted combos and some units that will carry you.
Putting 4 or 5 horses in the same unit is so fucking retardedly OP, and there are equipments available very early on that completely counter their only weakness, and there are enough of these weakness countering equipments that you can legitimately field an entire squad of them to just mow shit down, and they aren't even the most OP thing you can do, just the easiest OP thing you can do

Playing the game on the extra difficulty that you unlock after beating the game once is also pretty easy, though the early game is noticeably harder. Once you get to about mid game even on the actual hardest "New Game +" difficulty, it's still extremely easy. Very good and very fun game though.

There's almost endless variability on how you can create units and set up equipment in this game, it's really fun. Self imposed challenges are required to get the most of the game on replays though.
I think I'm on my 5th playthrough now and currently doing a 'single target attacks only' run where I don't use anything that hits rows, columns or full teams. It's a lot of fucking fun to use weapons and accessories I never bothered with before, and set up teams with either a focus on pursuits or counters to get the most out of them. I love this game.

The game was a lot of fun. It was too easy, but I enjoyed setting up cool team comps and broken combos. The difficulty is, sadly, one of the major issues that really stops the game from being like an actual 9.5/10
It is so easy, even on the hardest difficulty, that one group of cavalry can pretty easily clean up like 90% of missions, and that isn't some cheesy broken strategy. The game basically tells you to use the cavalry together because of their obvious synergy and even the fact that they literally all know one another and are friends or their mentor. It would be like if you had a game where a husband and wife were super strong together, of course you'd use them.

But it was still overall a really unique battling system that I want to see them expand in a new game. They'll probably never make a sequel, but I hope they basically take the gameplay style and just add more to it. More units, more spells, more equipment, more abilities, harder difficulty, more optional challenges, etc. I still recommend the game if you have not played it.

Also port it to PC, what the fuck. I played the game on my Switch and I would have liked art in a higher resolution.
