I thought the 3ds version was pretty shit. the engine the game was built on was not suited for DQ, the world felt really small with the awkward camera angle and terrible draw distance. the interior of buildings looked pretty good
the overworld monsters were an afterthought, encounter rate in some dungeons were actually higher than the original because they made the paths too narrow
the fucking menus in the game had delay to it making the combat and equip screens move along really slow. it was a shoddy port and the game deserves more

They look super weird and uncanny despite being near 1:1, I think it's just trying to CGI-ify/make their colors and appearances realistic despite the Toriyama faces. If they kept a thick shaded lining like the old artwork, basically taking the designs directly off the artbook page with shading and linework, that's one thing, but peeling it back for modern render shading while keeping their appearances identical looks bizarre. That, and giving the Hero shaded eyes where he has black ones in the OG, so at first glance anyone familiar with VII will be thrown off.

I was dabbling with that in emulation a little while ago and it does look like they've done this remake from the ground up instead of using the 3DS version as a basis but I'd need to actually sit down with that release more to know for sure. Because now you can have two classes and considering the mixed skills in the og it seems that now each character can use and master two classes at the same time, each class has it own set of skills that characters can learn like in the OG game, but now by mixing two classes characters will have access to exclusive skills depending on the two classes being used.
EX: While using both Dancer and Priest we will learn Hustle at certain class level (1-8) but if we change the Priest to a Warrior we will learn Sword Dance but won't be able to use Hustle, while the skills learned from single classes (Sidestep from the Dancer, Heal from the Priest and Dragon Slash from the Warrior) will be permanent not matter if we change classes.
The 3DS version was a mixed bag for me but the class system was way better than the OG, but this shit ain't bad either.

Dragon Quest in general is a spastic series of doing shit for the sake of impulse. Like how DQ VIII on PS2 in the English release got orchestrated music to try to appeal to westerners versus the synthetic old-school approach the JP version had, plus a dub and all while JP got nothing, and then the 3DS version finally came around and they inverted the soundtracks so JP got orchestral while everyone else got synthetic. The vocation mechanics are much more involved than three, since you need to fight so many battles as one to master all of its skills and traits, and mastering certain combinations of vocations let you unlock more advanced vocations to master. I can believe Orgodemir hiding himself on the last surviving island to get the Hero to unlock time travel and have him give him the world on a platter or kills and replaces Kiefer when he leaves with the gypsies. Ra's Mirror which appeared at the end of the game in Cathedral of Blight can hint at it too but you can argue it was for the very few enemies that change forms. Only tips I can think to give you involve some spoilers don't invest too deeply into Kiefer past around the 10-15 hour mark, especially never give him any of your seeds cause he leaves forever, and for much later in the game make sure Maribel isn't the glue holding your team together or else you're going to be going gimped into an absolutely hellish boss fight and will need to grind classes to make up for Maribel's absence, she does rejoin you eventually though.
