Back in the day rips made by scene groups like Myth and TECHNIC had a lot of work done to them. Removing FMVs, making textures smaller, compressing every sound in a different codec and then re-encoding them back to the original codec at install time, and many other tricks that were time consuming not just to install but also create and test.

For the lore: in 2011 there was a compression dick weaving contest, which was won pretty clearly by the PACK* compression suit. It was also considered a joke. You needed 1 hour of computing power to compress a 1MB file, it was based on neural network, and most people laughed at it. Why would you use a resource hog to gain like 2% of file size on the result? It's also very unwieldy (as it takes 2 GB of RAM, in fucking 2011) and you can't use it for anything quick or anything important, given, again, the fucking HOURS taken to decompress stuff.

Fun fact: Fitgirl is using the PACK* compression suit. It saves 2% of the resulting file size. It also takes 6 hours to decompress. Why does Fitgirl use a joke of a tool that was laughed into oblivion in fucking 2011? Because lol
