Because it brought back everything that made old JRPG great. We finally got turns again, we finally got an overworld again, a focus on story and characters instead of menial busywork and exploration, cool combat mechanics (even if not as good as those in shadow hearts), great music, interesting world.

The big "twist" ruined it for me, and it barely kept my attention before that. Destorys the AAA narrative where you need hundreds of devs, multi-million dollar budgets that goes over 100 million. They did it with just 30 devs and a few million. They made the game cost only 50 dollars. None of that 70 dollar bullshit. And it is NOT woke nonsense.

Twitch reflex is the antithesis to rpg. Literally taking the worst elements of 2 genres to combine them. Mario RPG, Legend of Dragoon, Undertale all fucking awful.

I ended up disliking this, but I gotta say that on the beach cinematic at about the beginning of the game was a strong scene, felt like a fantasy D-day. Based on game play statistics, most people don't even play the games they fawn over past the first few hours, so the start leaving a strong impression is ultimately a big part of it one way or another.

It's a decent game. Not the best ever, not awful. Might not be for some people, but it definitely felt fresh after FF flopped badly, and became directionless, plus Japanese twink characters fatigue. That elevated the thing, but it's not that bad.
