I live in New Jersey, it's alright.
>Philly 20 minutes away, NYC an hour away
>grew up in a historic town that was mostly 150+ year old buildings
>pine barrens and beaches
>still barely clinging on to the arcade scene
>live in an area now that's a lot of jap and korean immigrants or on visa and there's a lot of Asian markets and restaurants here as a result

>central jersey is urban shithole
>closer to NYC you are is also an urban shithole
>further south is beaches and arcades, but also tons of MAGA nuts and tourists
>further north is completely rural with MAGA nuts but they are spaced apart, few tourists

Living in north jersey is comfy if you don't mind the taxes, can drive, and keep to yourself (or at least live in the woods where people will leave you alone). Good pizza and bagels. If you're lucky you'll have a good mexican and korean mart within reasonable driving distance (because shoprite selection sucks). I can drive into town where there is a nice mexican mart and korean mart next to each other with great bubble tea. Across the street is an indian place with a giant tandori oven that makes good garlic Naan. I can't reach any of this without driving 30 minutes away though. I do have a good pizza place and mexican place right near my house though at least. Also a dairy queen for some reason.

Where do you live to be able to get to both that fast?
It takes me ~45 to get to Philly but NYC is still at least 2 hours away if not almost 3.

I had a choice to change jobs and go to Newark but I turned it down. When I was a teen I was a toll collector for the turnpike for two summers up that way and it was way too different up there. Feels like a different culture entirely.

North jersey is very weird compared to the rest of the state. Actually it's one of the weirdest places I know in general. That's kind of the charm though.

They are insane but fucking christ ever bakery they own is like heaven on earth. And if you're friendly with them they will give you free food. I was swimming in donuts at one time, several boxes a week. The freshest, nicest donuts you can eat. It was dangerous. I eventually started donating them around town because fuck, I would easily eat like 3 of them a day.

Objectively speaking, yes. But not in the way you're thinking. The games weren't ruined by it until Project 8, and the real killer was the need to have everything feel like it all existed in the same place, and for everything to connect together. Before, you could have enclosed levels dedicated to a single theme. But with Project 8, you were fixed to one location and the creatively crucial globetrotting element was dropped.
