I recently (this week) just started playing HoMM3 again after 15 years.

I've never played any of the HoMM3.5 fanmade stuff like HotA. Should I? I want new maps but all the player made maps are for the modded shit.

There will be a lot of balancing and nerfs for sure, but mostly because it's modern devs with access to easy remote patching. Game design and balance is srs business these days, everyone tries to make gameplay as smooth as possible.

HoMM3 Complete from GoG or anywhere else but Steam = good.
HoMM3 HD on Steam = irredeemable trash. An upscaled remaster with no expansions.
HoMM3 HD+ (https://sites.google.com/site/heroes3hd/) = good . A fan patch, does not just higher res window but many QoL improvements, for single and multi player (e.g.: a button to replay quick combat). Gets installed on top of the Complete. Also has some paid subscription lobby option for tourneyfags, I think?
Horn of the Abyss = good. A fan expansion with new towns, campaigns, units, map objects that comes with HD+ patch bundled.

So you get the GOG version and either just HD+ patch or HotA straight away (you can still play the original there, it's a separate executable).

I just started HotA and the balance changes I'm seeing just feel like shit. All the normal monster stacks on the map are like 3x strong and this is some puzzle chess shit instead of exploration, where I basically have to know the map before I can properly play it. Who likes this?

Most of the fun in this game for me is/was just exploring a map I hadn't played before. If I have to know the map to play it well, that defeats the whole point

Are all the maps like this? This was one of the HotA single scenarios rated "normal". I mean I know this is a skill issue, but HoMM of all things isn't a game I particularly like minmaxing past trying to be a bit efficient in general.

Can I play dragons in HOMM?

To anyone playing Olden Era demo, do you try and go for Subclasses or just pick value skills? Honestly I can not tell if they are worth going for or bait for Dungeon...

There are dragons but there is no dragon centric faction.
Dungeon is an alliance of various underground monsters and has Cave/Black/Ashen Dragons as their final unit, and possibly the best recruitable unit in the game. Some units like Lich Dragons are better but you also can't actually recruit them.

Starting to get it now, I just can't throw battles away like that, since I need to prioritize taking key resources...
