I played it this year and yeah it was absolute fucking kino. KEIZO is a legend. I still haven't played the dlc tho

I played the DLC like a year ago and stopped right before reaching the final layer of the dungeon. I didn't care too much about Baker Daughter and the plot was pretty sparse and kinda disappointing. Dunno if I even want to go back and complete it at this point

I just picked it up. I'm playing on hell and while the start was rough, the difficulty is about where I want it now. It's easy to miss but if you scroll around the town menu there are more options than there initially appears to be. I missed that for a while and couldn't buy anything. You have to pay a guy in town square to access most of the shops.

its generally very worth doing as it unlocks many new powerful karon skills and extra gems for equipping them, BUT you can always just do it later. You will even be able to revisit previous stages soon enough. You can even wait until the very end of the game to do it and still 100% but leveling up many weapons is unequivocally ideal (and fun)

The stick is intentionally much slower to level up, you can simply keep it until a later stage of the game that drops way more EXP so you get it in an instant

Gaiden is the same idea as the shitty final dungeon but the execution is much better. I was pleasantly surprised by Gaiden even though I didn't like that dungeon at all. Gaiden still isn't anywhere near as good as the main game and doesn't do anything important or interesting with the story.

You're almost done with the main story, the rest is just unlocking all the styles, magic, etc and beating the arena, which consists of most of the main game story bosses, the 6 gods and the arena master/bar owner as the final fight.
There is a cheevo for beating Kai on the 2nd stratum which is missable if you lose.

You should master as many things as possible since they give new KARON skills or points.
You can't use the same items on opposite sides. so you need to do some basic math to balance them in order to get full efficiency of every bonus, otherwise bonuses will be reduced to whatever % offset by the imbalance.

Besides the stick, doing it in general is pretty worth it. If you really want to encourage yourself doing so, play on Hard or higher since the skills can be pretty juicy.

As for the stick, honestly, just level it once you're 2-3 chapters in. The XP from monsters scales, and the stick just has an absurdly long XP requirement (for a good reason).

I did use the laser pistol. I made an entire build around guns, and it absolutely fucked for about 10 minutes before I ran out of ammo and materials to make the ammo.

Atleast with arrows, you can stack them way beyond 99 by just consuming quivers. The bow with the triple shot was fun as fuck to use with the ninja class in Gaiden.

You can tell it's a guy's labor of love when all the lore that seems like meaningless fluff at the beginning of the game ends up playing a role later on. It's as if the famous "Zanzibart" not only really existed in the game's lore, but several hours after you heard someone mutter his name, you found yourself invading his temple, talking to him in person, fighting him, winning his weapons and equipment, and even getting an item that changes some basic mechanics of the game that you had no idea could be changed.

It doesn't really matter. In fact how you want to balance the scales will change at least 3 different times throughout the game. Just focus on any stats or passives you feel like you really need. I think HP Regen is important. It's just about trying to get the best bang for your buck. Try to have as many passives as possible and never copy the same level of passive. Always make sure one side equals the other if it doesn't: look what could be flipped to the other side to make balancing easier THEN remove/add more numbers.

The stage difficulty meters are the greatest indicators of how possible it is for you to clear a stage with your current stats. Don't go waltzing into a stage rated danger because you're going to get spanked. Grind on easy stages for a while and gather material for making armor and weapons. When you get some decent equipment for an area, try challenging the special enemies of the stage (just make sure you have the items that negate exp and leaf loss on death just in case). Their drops can be used to get better equipment.

Don't neglect upgrading your gifts, and remember that when you get access to boards, you can extract techniques from your equipment.

The fish monger in the desert has some of the best equipment in the game (with items that give +1000 attack, defense, double attack etc). But you might have to start gambling on the lottery tickets to give you high valued fish.

Also, the coliseum acts as another measure of how well you're doing, and can net you some items earlier than you can normally get them. Finally, don't neglect status effects, they are of extreme importance. Especially against the final coliseum fights, the elf sisters, and the fairy princess (needed for the true end).

I think the game has some of the best loot ever. You get a bonus for using every piece of equipment, and since weapons have different movesets, reach, speed, damage, and some are one handed and some are two handed, it doesn't good job of switching up the gameplay a little bit. The enemies are pretty simple behaviourally and are mostly a threat in groups, but at least on the higher difficulties they can kill you very fast and need to be taken seriously. The maps are not bloated, pretty much every screen has something unique to justify it. You do have to backtrack through most screens at least once though. There's a lot of dialogue but I love it and I usually don't have patience for dialogue heavy games. Give the demo a try and see what you think.

Theres a single achievement for playing on Hard or higher. Hard gives you an exp boost so you end up grinding less than you would on normal/easy.
I think you can still fiddle with the difficulty freely until you start chapter 2, it gives you a warning about it iirc.

Keizo made Astlibra all the way back then because the industry wasn't releasing any more cool side-scroller RPGs.
Even nowadays they are scarce. Keizo has gone through all the ones with good rating on Steam and was playing the shitty ones last I checked.
That's to say no, there isn't quite a lot to recommend that is similar to Astlibra.
Sadly the defining and only flavor for the genre has become the Metroidvania, when the genre had a lot more to offer in the past.
Faxanadu, Sorcerian, Monster World series, Zelda 2, Ys 3, and so on are part of that lineage. It's a genre that thrived during the 8 and 16 bit era.
