Right now, W10 is still something like 30% of users on Steam. So, devs will only drop W10 when they don't care about losing 30% of their potential sales. For AAA, that will take years.

games and software will keep working you just can't ask for tech support if you run into a problem, even if it's not even windows' fault. once tech support asks you for your windows version or some sort of diagnostic log that shows you're on the old version they will just drop you and say get the new version no matter what. that's all this shit is for, liability so they can't be sued if something happens while you're using unsupported software.

I'm one of them. Mostly it's just for vidya. Anything on Steam that got patched after June-ish this year doesn't download through the steam client, but steamcmd still downloads them perfectly. Security-wise I'm on a NAT behind a linux box and a few other measures.
I will eventually move this PC to Mint. Just not yet.

Games are still being made that work on Win7. The next DX version doesn't seem to be coming out anytime soon, and there's no reason or means to move away from 64 bit architecture. The real kicker is Chromium, and that supported Win7 well after its EoL. LTSC versions of Win10 won't go EoL until 2032, so it's gonna be a while until Chromium can drop it as an OS.

This is the reason. The vast majority of people buy pre-builts, and they have the latest OS installed by default. Building your own computer and installing the OS yourself is surprisingly uncommon behavior.

I don't care, I'm on LTSC and I think I still get security updates, but even so I don't care unless some wild RCE shows up. After this I'm probably going to run bazzite or something. Anything with a kernel level anticheat isn't worth playing anymore.

Year and a half tops. SDKs will just drop 10 for no reason at all so suddenly no more updates to existing software, Nvidia and AMD will drop drivers despite the numbers, and so on. Happened to 7, happened to 8.1, will happen much faster now as MS dropped all pretenses of giving a shit.

It took 4 years for people to face significant issues with 7 after 10, and that was a much more accepted transition. 1/3 of PC are not compatible with 11 and turnover to 11 will still take 2-3 years to get >90% range. Microjeet has no incentive to force a harsher transition unless they actually want to launch mass linux.

Anyone whos still running 7 would be doing themselves a favor by switching to Linux at this point.

The first game that didn't run on 7/8 that I wanted to play was Death Stranding in 2020, that was less than 6 months after 7's EOL (not including ESU) and 2.5 years before 8.1's EOL.
It didn't even support Windows 10 versions before 1809.
But it was because it required DX12 and Windows 11 doesn't have a new DirectX so 10 is probably safe for some time outside of games that require TPM and SecureBoot and 10 supports those anyway.

I installed Windows 11 enterprise with rufus, uninstalled the handful of garbage pre-installed programs and ran a couple of of anti-telemetry programs and now it's basically the same as windows 10.
I don't know why people are acting like win 11 will kill them.

Steam has a stupid red banner, but otherwise works and all the games I play run just like they always have.
Firefox ESR still gets constant security updates that just keep getting extended on 7.

I admit I haven't used 7 in a while, and Im basing this off of what I've read online. Many people have said there are issues with Steam decompression, needing to use directx compatibility tools for some games, and lack of support for software in general, including drivers for newer hardware.
If it's working for you, then hell yeah dude. However, a day will come when it won't anymore, be it 10 days or 10 years from now, and unless you want Microsoft or Apple's dick in your mouth, all you have left is Linux. In case you ever do care to try it, the best distros for gaming are:
