It was always called the playstation, it was only referred to psx in places that needed to shorten the page real estate like catalogs and game mags, and only sometimes.
PS is too vague so they used alternative like from Japan.
Sony is not going to release a console and then do everything they can to remove their brand by calling it something vague or a shorthand.

Text strings in Sony's ROM BIOS, SDK libraries, etc. often call it the "PS-X". I remember someone once claiming the X came from "experimental" (as in it was an experimental project at Sony after the cancellation of the SNES CD expansion), wonder if there's any truth to that.

Because that was its codename right up until launch, to separate it from the PlayStation they were working on with Nintendo that was supposed to be a SNES with a disc drive.
PS1 made no sense until there was a PS2.

PS1 is the proper name. Yes, it didn't initially have "1" in front of it. But you know what else doesn't? Nearly everything ever produced or named in a sequential order. "World War 1" was at first "The great war". "Terminator 1" was "Terminator", "Rocky 1" was "Rocky". Popes with numbered names like "Anastasius 1" or "Boniface 1" weren't literally named "1" by their fathers. The "1" was retroactively applied when other Popes with the same names came to be.
In fact, this is a reason why the Xbox One caused such a shitstorm upon reveal. With the Xbox 360's release giving the first Xbox the name "Xbox 1", People were losing their shit over two consoles named "Xbox one/1". Correct for PS2 and up (Sony switched to ELF later SELF), but on PS-X they do. I don't remember if the BIOS actually checks for "PS-X EXE" though or if it just reads the few fields it actually uses from the header like the initial stack pointer address and entrypoint address, nevertheless the official SDK tools always put "PS-X EXE" there

This one is actually pretty funny and simple. The initials "NGC" were already taken by a highly prolific coin grading and verification company. There's not a chance in hell Nintendo wanted to mess with them, so they just used "Gamecube Nintendo" as the initial instead.
