The fight is dogshit not only mechanically but asethetically too. It's probably the least impressive final DLC boss Fromsoft has ever done.
Manus was cool as fuck and had possibly the most fluid animations of any boss in DS1. Ivory King had that insane jump to the chaos pit. Gael legitimately feels like a next gen fight compared to Radownies, taking place on a gigantic chunk of land and eventually spiraling into a cataclysm as the world around shits itself from Gael's power.
Here we have what? Reused Pontiff combo? Animations so janky they make him feel robotic during certain animations? The least impressive visual implementation of speed of light you can ever find in video games?

my issues with bosses like that is that you can punish but the punish isnt necessarily interesting
he is so spammy and constant that you can always do small pokes and slashes, but cooler slower ashes and 'special' attacks are often completely invalidated

I've been recently looking at nioh 3 footage and noticed how "humanely" the bosses showcased thus far are designed compared to modern fromsoft. Barely any delayed gotchas. Strong, but not obnoxious combos that give you ample time to breathe. I wonder when Fromsoft itself lost the plot in this regard because any competitor is currently BTFOing their boss design.

this is the part i disagree with
maybe i would have liked him a lot more if i played ds3 on release but i found gael pretty boring. i mean objectively speaking he is extremely style over substance, his moveset is literally weaker than bosses from the main game. Arguably index gundyr or dancer or whatever has harder attacks. Gael just has more health and damage basically but nothing really distinguishes him

If he does literally anything in the first phase, you roll in his direction and attack him in between. If he does his combo where he screams then does multiple slashes you can actually just spam roll until its over. In his second phase his cape is cool except it mostly just encourages you to "eat" the attack more with your i-frames and roll inside of him even harder, if you try to actually evade you get poked by it. His crossbow and light rings and lightning bolts are cool but they get automatically countered by absent mindedly strafing sideways while going towards him.
Thats it, thats the entire fight, literally just roll forward whenever he does ANYTHING. In something like elden ring bosses you at least should consider rolling in different directions to not get frame-trapped and have much more interesting defense options

Nioh 1-2 bosses were braindead as fuck past the very early game. They were extremely anemic and you spammed to death so they compensated by giving them immense damage in the off chance they actually hit you.
Almost everyone trying to 'compete' with fromsoft is making some really braindead iframeslop/parrryslop that literally strips everything that makes fromsoft games kind of interesting beyond their limitation
If anything fucking Silksong or whatever is mogging everyone trying to compare to Souls just because they actually have their own combat mechanics instead of being the most creatively bankrupt retards on earth.

The balance has heavily shifted from slow and methodical exploration heavy gameplay to flashy boss battles that feel hollow because there hasn't been a single meaningful improvement to the core combat formula in the last 15 years, if anything, all recent additions just dumbed it down like the retarded L2 sticks. The level design went to shit, you can count the amount of well designed and interesting dungeons in elden ring with fingers of one hand, the rest feels like something an intern would come up with during his break, this includes several disappointing legacy dungeons like raya lucaria and volcano manor.
On top of it, they have completely nuked their experimental online mechanics which is the biggest loss of them all.

Yeah, as someone who enjoys throwing myself at overtuned bosses for hours (literally spent like 8 hours on rellana at scoobytree level 1 the day sote dropped), the root of the problem is that the boss and level are no longer treated as a cohesive challenge. Retards bitched about boss runbacks, so what we got were either shortcuts that let you skip the entire level once you got through it once or bonfires right outside the fogwall. Thus the level became something that you run through once a playthrough, which has multiple butterfly effects (such as making invading/co-oping suck even more). One other effect was the necessity for the boss fight to be more of a challenge (which is of course also incentivized by the marketing), as estus is no longer being attritted by the level. Sote also just had notably terrible level design in general.

You can boil down 90% of souls levels to a bunch of corridors. idk why you keep bringing up the catacombs, because yeah, turns out a level that goes down has more opportunites for alternate paths and drops than one that goes up. The three-dimensionality of the Grand Archives comes into play in that you are constantly being harassed by scholars and a crystal sage shooting at you, as you progress through it and chase the sage down. Of course, Elden Ring, a game with a jump button is going to use verticality better than a game without it.
