I grew up through that era and it makes more sense when you remember back then pretty much everything was just static pages and images that took forever to load on your 56k dialup modem. Forums and other interactive websites weren't a thing for a few more years, which is when the internet really took off. Something like 4chan in 2000 would have blown people's fucking minds.
