As a gamer, why should I use Linux? Seems like its a hassle to make anything run on it.
Meanwhile, Windows just works.

Windows stopped ""just working""" since 8 and it gets shittier with each version. 11 is so shit you can't even make local account without terminal...and with pre-release versions you can't even make local account without regedit edit. The absolute state of modern Windows

It's not a hassle for the most part. but if you don't have a problem with Windows or like Linux already, there is no point.

ok, then don't use it
*goes back to installing Fedora 42 on a USB stick to try out because Debian/Ubuntu are shitting themselves a lot lately*
Linux Mint just works though. Been using it for two years without problem. The one single thing that wouldn't work is an old game from 1999 that doesn't even work on Windows correctly without some fiddling, and that's just because Linux/Proton doesn't support that level of backwards compatibility, which I think is completely fair.

I love these little challenges to try and tackle with winetricks. which game?

Gothic, it's using some ancient sound library that just isn't supported. You can get the game to run pretty easily by turning off sound entirely, but where's the fun in that

having tried a number of DEs, I still like XFCE the best. it has this comfy Windows XP feel to it and I've basically not had frame pacing issues with it while gaming. KDE was doing some weird window grabbing/border things a year ago when I had it installed as an Ubuntu flavor. nothing massively against it - just far too many problems when installing Arch and other oddities that all pointed back to KDE bugs.

I don't want an AI pre installed in my computer scanning everything I do and sending it to microsoft, I also don't want to use a system that might change how it works once everyone moved to it and is already relying on it, and force me to use things I don't want to.
It's not hard to game on linux, specially if you use steam, but even if it was impossible I'd still stick to it and jailbreak some console to play games there. There's no reason you should subject yourself to microsoft's satanic influence either, but if you do, you don't get to complain about how things are only getting worse

have you tried downloading Spine?
https://clockwork-origins.com/spine/
if launching it with that doesn't work, I think the other fix might be installing directmusic with winetricks.
an absolute last resort could be trying OpenGothic, even though G1 isn't fully supported yet.

It depends.
If you're an eSports faggot that plays games that actually support linux you might get some benefits (CS:2 for instance got an update recently that makes it just run better). But you might also get cucked in the future because some corporation thinks there's too many cheaters (happened with Apex Legends, it used to work well on linux and then they decided to actively stop that from happening).
If you're on a basic bitch basic gaymer setup with 1 monitor or you use an AMD GPU, a lot is already done. You might just give a fuck about the OS really. Maybe Windows is giving you too many headaches, maybe not. There's plenty of reasons to leave Windows behind, but if you do any sort of work or have a hobby that involves editing software you might get cucked as well. Really here the biggest benefit is not the games, is leaving Microsoft behind.
If you want to run some older weird games you might actually find linux easier to work with. I'm not kidding with this. There's some games that are a real pain in the ass to run on modern versions of Windows. That includes even 16 bit applications now from ancient times.
If you have a bit of a better setup and you enjoy fancy gimmicky shit though? Like HDR? A working multimonitor setup? Whatever bullshit nvidia or AMD add to their panels? Undervolting Nvidia GPUs? Some weird chinese controller you bought? Yeah you might get some issues there. Also if you're on nvidia and you usually play DX12 titles, there IS a performance cost, and they've been trying for a while to fix that. Basically if you have money, and you spend a lot of it in regards to games or software subscriptions, unfortunately you're going to have to stick to Windows or suffer. That's been my experience not now, but for 20 fucking years. I wish I was shitting you.

I use Linux because its now good enough. I still believe Windows 11 is better for gaming. But I'm willing to work around Linux's shortcomings to not use Windows.
OBS replays work
My games work
VRR works
HDR works
Different refresh rates now work
The only things that I miss are racing games due to EA not supporting Linux and the drivers for my wheel being inferior on Linux.

KDE is good if you'll use a drawing tablet or a touch screen, since it has its own drivers for that and it works out of the box, but if you don't, xfce is definitely the most minimal while also being usable and comfy DE. I found tiling window managers to be a meme since most of the stuff I use will be in full screen anyway, and having a billion shortcuts on your keyboard is a pain when you're using other software with their own shortcuts, it's only useful if you want to be sure no one else can use your computer

You shouldn't. You could have tricked me into wasting my time with a different answer if you had resisted the urge to write this part:
>Windows just works.
If you aren't even looking for an alternative to Windows, then you shouldn't even be thinking about Linux, let alone asking people to give you reasons for using it. What's the point? You've already made up your mind. So you're not really asking; you're just trying to have some cringe-ass debate about an operating system you've never used and will never use. Get a life.
>Seems like its a hassle to make anything run on it.
Works on my machine. Be mad about it.

My only true option to have a somewhat painless experience on Linux after extensive testing with my current monitor and nvidia GPU, is to avoid using Wayland on desktop.
It is a big compromise. Everytime I want to play a game with HDR, I have to essentially switch sessions. I can't just keep everything running.
If I use Wayland on desktop, I get nothing but random artifacts, I'm refresh rate cucked to avoid blanking issues and scaling is all absolutely messed up. This back and forth between X11 and Wayland is not worth it. If you're switching to linux, and you're not using AMD, switch to AMD, or don't switch to linux.
