So long as it looks anatomically plausible, it depends on the game's tone. If the game is very serious, cover bitches in steel but keep them stylish. If the game is wacky, go nuts.
I don't really care about realism because devs aren't historians and I don't want to see nothing but not that close misses pretending to be considered accurate shots.
And even if they were capable of making historical armor, that shit wasn't designed to deal with monsters and magic anyway, so it still wouldn't be "realistic".
But remember: anatomically plausible. No shit clipping into itself.

I actually have some experience with this type of situation in Modded Skyrim. I once made a sword-and-shield character and by the late game maxed out her resistances and armor level. With the mods I had installed she was basically immune to physical and magical attacks. She could stand in the middle of 5-10 melee enemies and tank hits for real life hours. There were two problems I found out about though.

The first was that she was a bit shorter than the men and so for some reason the physics were altered such that enemies could literally ragdoll her across the environment. This isn't a big problem because she's so tanky but it means that she kept getting punted to the ground while taking hits. With enough time this could soft lock her in a fight. The other problem were status effects. Sure she had 100% resistance, but any wacky spell or gimmick could slow her down.

Basically, an OP nigh-invincible girl - armored or otherwise - can still be defeated by just manhandling her.

It depends on what the utility of the armor is.
Many armor pieces as well as swords and shields were not actually made for combat, but rather for ceremonial pieces meant to celebrate the glory of the army, or authority that they represent.

I think scantily clad sexy armors are totally fine as long as they aren't meant for combat, or if they exist in games where the style is so whimsical and unrealistic that it doesn't matter.
Besides, usually women don't really belong on the battlefield outside of witches or angels

Honestly, it's a great simulator for how real-time fantasy tactics would actually work.

AoE spells force you to split up and stay out of line of site, ranged attacks force you to work the angles even if you're a melee fighter, and of course, melee fights ensure you care about spacing and distance.

Small teams, environmental hyper awareness, successful quick strikes, or plans gone wrong and long dangerous slugging matches. Every playstyle is intensified and exaggerated.

So basically let the overall aesthetic and context determine the look rather than trying to universalize historical accuracy (which many people get wrong anyways, history was much more vibrant and drippy than people assume).
