So as we all know, everybody knows Zelda is about dungeons with puzzles.

Now, I know in most games there ARE dungeons. Labyrinths, temples, whatever they may be called. Palaces. There's a tree or two in there two.

HOWEVER.

Are there actually puzzles?

light all the torches in the room

push the blocks

kill all the enemies in the room

thats pretty much the extent of it. aside from learning how to use your new items but they usually make that pretty straightforward

From gameplay I saw of one of the Oracle games (I think it was the blue one?) there's some actual puzzles but otherwise no.

Occasionally.

The real puzzle was the friends we made along the way

Vague memory (and honestly this could be for the red game too, it was from a retrospective of the Oracle games I watched a while ago) but I think it involved using the time mechanic to find different routes in a dungeon.

Oh that's not a puzzle, that's observing/exploration.

Zelda is not about puzzles, but Aonuma "Zelda" is.

Zelda is about exploration and finding items which let you explore even more areas. At least it used to be.

Ah. Yeah then I got nothing lol, I always played the games for the dungeons and Gauntlet-like combat.

For the dungeons hmm...what's in the dungeon that's so interesting, if they lack puzzles?

I like to see what combat scenarios the devs can cook up and I also just like exploring labyrinths/caves in games.

Yes there are puzzles.

Usually it's single room puzzles or figuring out how to progress in the dungeon (hmm all paths lead to dead ends or loop back here, what do I do) It might be an environmental puzzle or realizing you can do blah blah blah to open something, I cant really say without spoiling

Almost all the Zelda games have some good puzzles in them but they're not puzzle focused games, they probably won't blow your mind more like "aha that's clever"

Zelda could go on without having dungeons, easily

Gotta be honest, always hated the dungeons and preferred exploring the overworld. I do like the puzzles however. I think that there's probably a lot of other people with the same thoughts, thus explaining why BotW sold so well.
I think i may be the only person on /v/ who absolutely hates what Nintendo's become, but likes TotK.

I'm the opposite. Dungeons are the actual level designs and the overworld is a means to an end 90% of the time. There's a few Zeldas with good overworlds like Zelda 1, ALttP and ALBW, but there aren't many.
