Mad King Redemption is one of the worst beat 'em ups I have ever played. They don't understand anything about what makes these games good. Stiff controls, the same three enemies copied and pasted everywhere and you have no attack variety.

Oh, and your gameplay gets interrupted constantly by loading (either to the next level or to the king and back).

Kingdom of Night was pretty cool conceptually. I liked the fact you have to manually slot different inputs for different spells in the correct order, and you have to recall from memory.

I've enjoyed what I've played so far of Hijong Park's Defender Patrol, if you're into that kind of low poly looking simulator game it smacks of Tiny Combat Arena but with its own twist that it's playable on flatscreen or VR with a fully interactive cockpit.

I like this one. It's an old school adventure platformer with some rpg mechanics. Most in form of various equipment and books from which you can learn skills for exp. Game just oozes charm despite most portraits being wack.

Brawler verdict:

Marvel Super Heroes:
Pretty meh, tiny movesets, enemies are invincible during all attacks (grab immune too), cast feels very samey

Mad King Redemption:
Bad. Absurdly small movesets which basically all feel the same even though one guy is a wrestler and another a mage, poor visual and audio design, a system where it costs hp to use the only powers yo uget mid-run but all healing is pathetically low. Feels bad to play, looks bad, is poorly designed, about what I'd expect from a game that kneels to the player in the intro and begs for sympathy points

Bottom-up: Actually promising. Dev actually replied to the little feedback its gotten so far so its faults may be fixed, sizeable movesets on both characters, feels fairly good to hit things. Main issue is that enemy defensive mechanics are just obnoxious. They'll dodge out of hitstun seemingly at will and baseball guys will counter you but you don't have a counter yourself

The other games in beat 'em up tab didn't actually seem to be beat 'em ups or were so clearly bad I didn't bother trying them.

Can definitely recommend foobar zero, it almost feels like s4 league. Almost. Lacks energy in some parts (sound/visual design) but the soul is 100% there. I even had fun playing with bots at first but when people are online it really brings back the memories. I unfortunately don't think such a game and their business model can succeed in today's world but I enjoyed my time with the game

Is dev is a novice and it shows, the enemies attacks sometimes interact strangely with the enviroment and get stuck, the sping doesn't work correctly and if you are not in the center perfectly you slide off and has no prepare sound so is hard to time when to start moving. That Bottom-Up game feels like a true hidden gem. It's got middling graphics and it's buried in the Beat-em-up section despite a lot of shittier games appearing before it so it's easy to skip over by accident. It's very low scope, but I'll definitely pick it up for like $10 if we get a couple more stages and enemies/bosses. I beat every part in the demo, even the CEO boss and they were all fun to fight.

This one is legit good, it like unreal, enemies are aggresive and duckroll. the weapons felt good and have a secundary shot/mode. the initial pistol is good and even if you think it's lacking you can change it to six-shot. I really liked it and is a long demo too. only bad thing was the little platforming it had and climbing but is not something somplicated so is a non issues as of now. recommended.

Don't download games that don't have a social media presence or something else that proves they've actually been working on it for a long time. Reviews don't count since those can be bought. Obviously if you get a UAC prompt when running the game don't accept it. Other than that you're pretty safe. Steam has had malware scares in the past but it's only been like 4 games, and they were malware pushed via updates. The actual initial build of your game is pretty well scrutinized for malware.

I haven't played that many incrementals but to me it seemed fine. It's a pretty basic TD with the incremental loop. I basically maxed out the demo in about 2 hours and had fun.

Homura Hime doesn't have a single original idea in its entire demo but it executes them pretty well across the board (except the platforming, that airdash is just barely too short to feel good, though I'm certain you get an off-brand Air Hike in the full game). Assault Spy will probably remain the best indie DMC-style game but HH has a level of polish that elevates it somewhat.

I've been hoping someone would mention this, I got into the alphas earlier this year and fell in love.
They've been tweaking the physics and tire models a lot over the last year. The level of depth is fantastic while still being incredibly satisfying to drive on a controller, some mad lads have figured out wheel and flight stick for the thruster control as well.

I'm not sure how inclined I am to take your opinion seriously, most people are just pretty terrible at playing games. To take Ground Zero as an example, I noticed some of the feedback for that game would be things like: You need to include a quickturn button, and a tutorial for dodging.

A tutorial for dodging and a quick turn were both features in the demo. Some people possess no ability to test out new things properly at all. The only reason I really entertain your opinion at all is I'm not overly interested in beatemups in the first place. I tried it out and it seemed as good as a beatemup as any other.

Can you name a better beatemup in this next fest? I suppose there was that cat one. That one wasn't too bad either.

They're arcade games at heart and designed to capture your attention and be fun right away. Mad King is just bad. I shouldn't even need to convince you. If you want good controls and different enemies try Streets of Rage 4, if you want "attack variety" try Final Vendetta. Absolum arguably has all 3 when you beat bosses and unlock other moves.
That said, even Final Fight from 1989 had good attack variety with a regular attack string, two jump attacks, a special attack, and a grab which can then be used for grab attacks or a throw. The fun in these kinds of games (for purists) is always down to spacing and handling multiple threat combinations rather than combos though.

You pick a weapon and you swing it/shoot it til completion, picking up roguelite items along the way that, while well itemized and loaded with potential for many peculiar builds, don't really modify the fundamental combat in any severe way. OK, so I tried it. I still stand by my contention that it is gay. Reminds me a lot of the Stellar Blade demo in that the boss battle is the only good part. Like Stellar Blade, people are only interested in this game because it has a girl. Unlike Stellar Blade, it also has Japanese characters screaming banalities in your ear the entire time. The characters and enemies are generic and boring, the artstyle looks like every other tranime game. Feels like a mid-tier PS2 game. If it was just a boss rush game I would be into it. Visuals are clumsy, card pictures are AI-gened, but this game is just a small hobby project the dev codes in his spare time. He properly understands the importance of synergies and combos in card games, so it feels pretty satisfying to build decks in it and seeing absurd shit happen as a result of your sick plays. Starts off a bit slow and synergy-devoid, but once you do a couple test runs you should be able to unlock all the fun cards and mechanics to build combos with. Unlike the previous one, looks gorgeous but the animations may be a bit stiff. Also similarly understands the importance of cool combos and synergies, + you get to play as a massive dragon killing entire armies and leveling entire villages.

Calyx reminds me of Creeper World, which isn't a bad thing because Creeper World is good (except the latest entry, IXE, was kinda underwhelming, where you are controlling a conventional land army against a constantly expanding mass instead of flying/landing turrets onto them. There's definitely a lot more micro needed since your units can't fly and will get trapped to their deaths if they get enveloped, so you need to keep them out of trouble.

This porn game had an interesting (but maybe questionable) game mechanic of having you send goblins to attack heroines, with the knowledge you would fail a million times. Even though you fail, you gain EXP, so you grind up the EXP to level your units enough that you eventually overwhelm the "hero". Obviously grindy, but interesting. The animation isn't bad either, if you are down with goblin males fucking human women.

Gnomeball was fun when it worked but the movement locks up every few seconds. Not sure if bug or intended but it makes it frustrating.

This one is pretty good although simple. You're Japanese fisherman sailing around, looking for fish to catch and sell to buy more fuel and upgrades. You got your trusty harpoon so non of that waiting for fish to catch, you look around your ship and throw it any passing fish you can spot under the surface. It's really cathartic. There's also some sunken ruins and plot about school girl but I didn't delved deeper into it.

Man, I'm actually at a point where I'm actively seeking bullet hells to play.
This one's premise is sorta fun: you get one pattern, some tools and 60 seconds to beat the pattern, but you fucking die in one hit. Doing things without tools gives you a special stamp. The difficulty is generous enough so that Normal actually feels normal enough for most of your clears to not take that long, so you can look up to Lunatic and shit for more of that shit. I only wish there were more track variety. It's Touhou but it's also Chinese so the mental illnesses cancel each other out.

The art and presentation in this one are quite good, and from what I can see, the visual evolution compared to the first title is enormous. It's unsettling and makes you feel helpless, but it's really annoying that the game it's essentially a loop where two entities start chasing you and instakill the girl with almost no time reaction, they often spawn in your face
