I just started the game on master ninja. Hard was just like ng2 hard mode, nothing special, the story was alright but I don't really care about it aslong as the bossfights are good. The parrying mechanic is very different and much more essential against bosses now. Also by just started master ninja i meant that I'm 15 hours in but still at chapter 3. It's the most brutal master ninja yet, mostly because the enemies do fucking combos now, and you get parried in midair all the time. You basically can't do the same combo twice, you WILL get parried if you do the same string twice and if you get parried you're essentially dead. It feels very different from ng2 master ninja. You have to be less reactionary but more planned, like you have to learn every sandbox.

This is REALLY cool if it works like that. I thought enemies would just parry any longer string, but if they let you get away with more as long as it's not repeated this is a nice incentive to use more of your move list. I like it a lot.

That's excellent, I love how each game feels different in this series, personally. 2 is indeed my favorite but I never disliked the fact that RE didn't feel like 2. I do dislike that Sigma 2 and 2 Black don't feel like 2 but that's because they're called 2.

In theory I don't mind the overtuned damage because this game has a billion healing mechanics. Every video I see people are spamming items and rebirth like there's no tomorrow, and then there's healing essence and red health recovery through damage.
It's only bad if it's so high that you don't have time to heal the moment you get hit once and you're dead, but if there's time to heal then it makes sense to take a ton of damage.
Just the fact that they didn't have to make enemies tankier than they were designed to be because the target hardware couldn't handle the same enemy counts in their engine already makes it better than Sigma 2 by default. It becomes a standard the game is balanced around rather than a bandaid to a different issue.

Not all it has going for it but it gives it purpose. Why do you do one combo instead of another in DMC? Because you feel like it, because it's boring to use the same. Why do you do one combo instead of another in Ninja Gaiden? To stay alive and win the fight.
On the other hand, doing both combo X and Y in DMC requires much higher execution, so that is its own challenge, but Ninja Gaiden takes the easy to play, hard to beat approach. So when you play on a difficulty setting that doesn't offer any challenge, the game kind of crumbles.
The idea is finding the difficulty setting that is a good challenge for your skill level, you shouldn't be steamrolling the game. If Normal is easy, play on Hard.

In UN the damage seems very high from the start but as your health upgrades and you adapt to it you realize just how many hits you're actually taking before death, which is in line with how you have multiple healing sources but they're not safely guaranteed the way buying them from a shop and hitting the button is, you have to earn them through action and active decision-making. Though I've also noticed there's attack/defence buff items in NG4 so any troubles people might have regarding damage will potentially solve themselves there anyway. One shots ultimately depend on the attack in question and options around it, the game still has revive items as well, and by the same token because people were so demanding of having items back the only answer to balance them was to dramatically heighten enemy damage output.

Yeah I never had any issue with RE not having healing items, it felt well balanced to me, but it definitely was a constant complain from release to this day, so it's no surprise they brought them back.
Looking forward to doing some testing (or someone doing it before release would be even better) to figure out just how much is the defense buff for that damage reduction item.
It's probably one of the things people will instinctively save for bosses but since this game doesn't have that many ads in boss fights it's best for tough encounters since bosses are much easier to dodge than 5 niggas at once.

Xbox really sending this game out to die huh, I guess we should be thankful it slipped through the cracks and got funded at all to begin with.

Though I will say that RE's healing can really highlight balancing issues as well. Spam 360 Y with Scythe and watch as you're always full health even in the sequences where your health is automatically draining, because it's a full SoB option select and you'll be hitting them constantly with no thought required.
It's probably easier to not run into that if whatever method you're relying on for healing can carry you through the whole game instead of you actively looking for chances to heal.

That's more a problem with the attack in question than the system, but even then Scythe 360 Y has its gaps despite them being too thin. For how abusable and powerful it can be it's still ironically the most active and punishable cheese strat in the series besides maybe NG1 UT spam. SoB option selects on heavy attacks is one of the most interesting deeper aspects of the combat with how it encourages multi-layered offense and aggression. You haven't lived till you've hit, pressured, triggered SoB and killed a snake chimera all with the one sequence.

NG bosses tend to fight very differently from the regular encounters, and always for the worse, even the good fights, you really do need to adjust to them and change your mentality. But this fight is one of the fun ones when you play by its rules. I like them adding stuff like grappling points and essence drops to bosses in 4 even without ads as well as regular enemies being able to block you out of strings so you can retain more of a continuous experience between stage and boss.

I've heard there were frame drop issues on the 360, and I've never encountered that on xbox one.

If you reduce it to that degree, then sure, but there are key differences in how you interact with the mechanics when "it's not your turn".
In crowd control you force your openings and get punished for making mistakes, in boss fights you wait for your openings and get punished for trying to play when it's not your turn. It's more passive and how fun that more passive experience will be depends on how interesting it is to avoid damage for that specific boss. Armadillo is a blast to fuck off during the meteor shower and shoot his head, very intuitive, at least to me, figuring out which attacks you can or can't punish for who the fuck knows what reason in the Volf fight is just dumb. And that fight isn't particularly difficult either, which is why I'm using it as an example. If I pick a hard one you can just say I'm salty, but with an easy one it's clear I'm just saying it's boring.

Yeah I like Ryu, I even like 3's story, but I like Ninja Gaiden the most. If NG4 was full Ryu but played more like DMC it would upset me. NG4 that plays like NG and has a new character sounds great, I'm in. Not as in the character himself, but people did constantly accuse 3 of being a "character assassination" and stuff like that. I liked that story myself, but "not my Ryu" was the most common complaint as far as characterization goes.
Platinum had their ideas for mechanics and direction they wanted to take the game, and decided a new character was better than turning Ryu into what they wanted. Maybe even weapon design came into play, since Ryu always had more realistic and functional weapons that look retarded after upgrading, while Yakumo has a fucking rocket hammer, a sword larger than most bosses, a DMC4 Pandora-like box of surprises and a rapier that makes him slide around the battlefield that turns into a TTGL drill. Can you seriously tell me none of that would be received negatively as Ryu's new arsenal when compared to "sword, two swords, tonfa, claws" and so on?

I think the only way they can bring Ryu to par is with a substantial overhaul. Turn Ninpo into a menu selectable like before, give him three more returning weapons on the d-pad. Yakumo just gets the one new weapon that you need to trade for the DDB, they compete for the same extra slot. And everyone will want to trade because DDB doesn't have a Bloodraven form, so the new one will be cooler. DS goes back to being mainly a Ryu thing.
