Quake Champions was better when the champions were actually overpowered and had abilities that could hit for over a hundred damage. In sterilizing that aspect of the game they simply veered harder into "quake 3 but worse."

Yes, the Ranger telefrag is a great example. Insanely cool and flavorful mechanic. The projectile was not that fast and other champions can spit on you for 100 damage and mini-blind you or straight up nuke you for, what was release DK, 150 fucking damage? They removed all the soul the game managed to have and now its just a shitty port of Quake 3 that runs like ass on modern hardware still and has a fucking cash shop inside it. Oh and that netcode, jesus fucking christ. It is always super fun to slip through a tele just to be forcibly rewound to a death cam at your starting location. Yeah the cool abilities carried this dogshit.

In Quake Live they kick people for not having a high rating. Clan Arena is just a mode where you spawn with all the guns and a full stack but only get one life. It is a bit boring.

Quake Champions is underrated and genuinely an improvement on the Quake 3 experience in a lot of ways even if it is held back by being live service and not moddable. Thankfully people have tried backporting Quake Champions balancing and stuff to Quake 3, dunno if that includes the spawning fixes.

And Nyx is fun to play.

The biggest problem with QC is two issues. The first issue is that just like RTS games, the fans don't want to try and play new games in the genre if they are different so they say "This isn't X!" and then when they make a game just like the older games in the genre they say "Why would I play Y if its just the same as X?". The second issue with QC was the botched launch where it ran like complete ass, and when they finally fixed the stability issue with the game, the netcode turned to ass. When they would fix the netcode it would just go back to running like shit and the cycle would repeat. This shit continued until 2 years ago.

This. When i first tried champions i was going in with a mindset of, "characters with unique abilities? I HATE IT KEEP YOUR OVERWATCH OUT OF MY QUAKE" but when i actually played it i quickly realized that having a wall jump is fun as hell and the tri bolt is actually amazing. Its the best quake.
