Definitely a side effect of growing up with social media and taking all of your social cues from it. Part of it is the vestiges of cancel culture, but directed in such a way that they feel insulated from criticism; as in, if they try to call someone out as a pedophile (as opposed to a bigot or a nazi), there's less likelihood of people jumping to the defense of the accused. Part of it is just young people trying to feel empowerment in whatever minimal way they can manage, and throwing around the most taboo of labels is one way of doing that.

I do think they genuinely believe what they're saying, and that part comes from an overall bigger cultural movement of sexual puritanism which I can't really pinpoint the source of. Again, I think social media is a major factor in that, but it's harder to grasp why. There does seem to be a more recent schism, however, and you'll find just as many zoomers getting annoyed at how ridiculous the constant witch hunting makes them all look.
