This playthrough solidified in my mind that's it's as good as I remember. It's a masterpiece. It's gotta be one of my top 3 games ever at least. Nostalgia isn't a factor, I didn't play it until I was old enough to drive.

Agreed, I don't think there's a single moment in the game that feels like "that part" that deters me from wanting to replay it. Even the aesthetics, while born partially from limitations, feel like Klonoa at his purest, it contributes so much to the dreamlike atmosphere by creating this small dissonance between the characters and the backgrounds. Thanks for taking the time to play and share it anon, I think it showed enough that people do still care about the games enough to at least try. It's admittedly difficult to talk about the games when they're such tightly made, linear experiences. It just doesn't give people enough room to express themselves and tell stories about their experience with the games. It's why every video going over it only really goes over the events of the story and their usually surface level interpretations (Running Shine admittedly did a lot to avoid falling into this trap). In that sense, despite Klonoa genuinely being a game, the recurring threads have more in common with threads about visual novels. The story and characters is all there is to really dig into, and because it's not a 40 hour experience with a 100k+ word count, it doesn't have enough stuff to meme or draw fanart of to keep discussion going.

Even if this thread doesn't survive, I hope to see you for Lunatea's Veil. It'd be nice to see the UI not have glitchy seams, or the silhouette of King of Sorrow in the opening not have a weird black box surrounding him for once. Assuming you're playing on original hardware.

That's the plan. I've only played it on emulator before so it'll be a cool new experience for me. Although it's worth noting that PCSX2 has definitely regressed over time. I don't remember KoS having a black box around him in the opening when I played it in 2019, and I know people these days report a lot of other issues that I don't remember having. One guy in a thread a few months ago couldn't even get the game to boot until I suggested trying a PCSX2 build that was several years old. The UI did always have seams though from what I remember, and the Dark Sea of Tears was completely fucked up beyond all recognition when I played it.

That's explain it, I just don't get why they're getting worse when their entire point is trying to accurately emulate things.

Also picrel is the black box. It only happens when you get the resolution to anything higher than the base amount, which would be fine but I find the game is oddly blurry if it's not upscaled to at least 2x scale. Upscaling is also what causes the UI to have those seams funnily enough. I also remember that the game crashes when it entered the credits, which isn't the worst time for it to happen, but it was still immersion breaking to have to look up a playthrough just to see the images in the credits. If that specifically doesn't happen on older versions of PCSX2 then I might have to look into that for when I next play.

I think it's got to do with the deinterlacing PCSX2 applies. PS2 does this stupid thing where it renders everything interlaced and can't be forced into progressive scan like Gamecube usually can. Interlaced video looks ok on a CRT, but awful on a modern monitor, so PCSX2 deinterlaces it but it makes it look blurry and shitty.
