I bought a new NVME drive and need to reinstall the OS. I won't touch 11 until the AI hype dies and they stop trying to push it. I don't need Clippy2000, I don't care if you can turn it off, I've experienced windows switching things back on randomly too much over the years.
I'm seriously considering SteamOS as an alternative to installing 10, as I was forced to use my steamdeck as a tablet PC for a bit, and it's not too bad. Between Steam and Lutris, I've only found a couple of programs it wouldn't run.

11 is good with something like StartAllBack (which gives it the same start menu/explorer/taskbar style as 7 and restores the old context menu)
But even so, you should not have to install something like that just to make the OS usable

Xp was perfectly fine. Reformat your hard drive and it runs like brand new. It struck the perfect balance of being accessible but not too hand holdy like the newer releases that don't trust their users to do anything by themselves. I'd say the peak came between xp and 7 (not counting vista). They were both great in their own way. I give the nod to xp over 7 but still appreciate what 7 did.

Every (major, actually used) version of windows has been worse than the last since XP, 7 was a downgrade from that but we were forced to use it because of technology advancing. 10 was an enormous fucking downgrade from 7 in every way and they had to actively force people to switch by intentionally making software and drivers stop supporting 7, and now 11 is a huge downgrade once again that people aren't going to switch to until they force video game companies and hardware manufacturers to artificially prevent windows 10 from working with new things just like they did with 7.

Win 10 is worse than 7. The only reason I "upgraded" two years ago was that modern hardware and software stopping working on 7 without me having to do a bunch of extra bullshit. The way I see it I'm good on Win 10 until 2030.

I'm on 10, but I wish I was still on Win7. I'm not happy, but it's at least stable.

I use Win11 at work and it throttles all the fucking time, does things I don't tell it to do even if I set a schedule, decides to just stop working properly until I enact an update, slow to do anything I ask, and generally SLOW as fuck to start up the desktop fully, even with me having turned off a majority of things that used to start at startup. Menus are shit and taskbar is ass, and I can't even fuck around with it anyways since it's the work computer. It is very much a case of Windows letting you know this is THEIR OS, and not the customers. It does what they tell it to do, not me. I am not an owner/admin, I am simply a user. They went stupid ever since they tried to turn windows into an "experience" like it's Mac or something. It's fucking shit.

Luckily I qualify for another free year of Win10 updates, so I'm kicking that can down the lane for another year. My options now are await Win12 and see if it's less shit, or switch to Linux (which I actually know how to use thankfully). I don't think Steam OS is meant to be a full desktop replacement (Valve said "not yet") so that's hopium/copium for now.

I think Win11 is too fucked to save with a service update.
