As an IP? No - the VR game likely won't change anything. And that's good. FMs and TDM is all we need, there's no need for new official games, they wouldn't be as good as the trilogy anyway. I hope it stays this way, no shitty remasters or anything, the fan content will keep coming and that's enough.
is this the beginning of another comfy Thief thread? the last one gave me hope for /v/

I think a good remaster or remake of the first trilogy could be good, if done well. The games are great but visually so bland and I know that's a product of it's time but it would be nice to play it without just bare corridors everywhere.

Building a new commercial game would require actual work from corpo game devs so that they could compete against the best of what the fan community give us for free (Black Parade, Scalet Cascabel, Into the Odd, Alcazar, etc etc).

A good remaster or remake would require a good studio and a good budget. That's not happening because the chances of the investment returning are slim - real, slow, methodical stealth games are too niche of a genre for the modern zoomer audience. So the only thing we could count on is a cheap, shoddy remaster, like the upcoming Deus Ex one.

and immersiveness, unparalleled atmosphere, outstanding level design, engaging world and story. it's a slow game, the locations are often large and complex, so the gameplay is boring when compared to other stealth games, but calling it mediocre is an insult - and i say this as an actual zoomer with no nostalgia for this series, i only got into it last year.

Thief atmosphere is something very strange that I cannot explain rationalize or explain. It’s the most 90s gaming experience you can have, in a weird and comfy kind of way.
There were some locations in Black Parade that felt like being back at home.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ws1hamUjm68
they weren't afraid to create something unique, even if it turns out to be strange and bizarre. the original thief is a mix of various themes and concepts, it's not just the typical 'fantasy meets steampunk', there's much more to it. nowadays no one would put industrial grungy soundtrack into such a game, it would be some generic dark ambience instead - because everything needs to fit into the established genre when it comes to the atmosphere now.
Anonymous No.723409543 [Report]
it's a game series that
>focuses on large maps
>has very slow gameplay
>already more or less told its story
best possible outcome is if something like what happened to Deus Ex, something like Human Revolution coming out
somewhat streamlined experience but still carries the soul of the originals to an extent. but that's never going to happen
and if it DOES happen, boomers (the only people who care about this series) will hate it no matter what state it comes out in. so it's a lose lose situation. just play fan maps till the end of time

I would argue it's not a stealth game, it's a stealth simulation. Comparing Splinter Cell to Thief is like comparing Ace Combat to Flight Simulator. It's no coincidence that LGS literally made flight sims before they made SS & TDP.

VR actually could have been good. When I played Alyx, all I could think was how a Thief game with that kind of object manipulation would be amazing, but I have no faith in the new devs. In a perfect world, we'd get a "remaster" of Thief that was just the engine/dromed with support for dynamic lighting, more robust physics, continuous campaigns in a seamless world like DS had and a better scripting system for NPC interactions. And also AI recreation of Russell's voice so FMs can ise new Garret lines. In reality, I'll be happy with lots of good FMs like we already get.

I've never been that in love with thief purely as a stealth game. It falls into the same trap most of the genre does where the path of least resistance is a boring cheesy playstyle where you bludgeon every guard you come across so you can search couch cushions in peace.
what's really inspiring to me about thief is the few occasions where it absolutely nails a no frills sense of adventure. down in the bonehoard and the original lost city, just using your gadgets and the games moderate first person platforming mantling system to overcome challenges was so refreshing compared to the usual circle strafe combat interruptions you usually get in that type of game.

Themes of occult mysticism with a symbiosis with a world going through an industrial revolution. Things that seem like obtuse incoherent 2 deep 4 u babble actually tie nicely into the story and you'll realize it by the end of the final missions. Very strong characters. Grounded, but the studio was also brave enough to try new things. Maps that incorporate lore and don't feel like levels, but rather as real locations.
It's difficult to put into words. There's just fucking magic in Thief, and in the first game in particular.

The actual ranking is
Thief 2 = TBP = various 1 off FMs > Thief
but yes, the setting is really strengthened by the environmental storytelling. The time period helps, because picking up a dozen audio logs in a scifi game feels like shit, but finding crumpled up or half burnt letters in different mansions that talk about a conspiracy to circumvent some law you read about in an official document you found on a guard captain's desk feels very, very "right". They aren't reclusive at all, they take part in many activities necessary to run the City, from patrolling the streets to manufacturing to maintaining public-use machinery. They are even allowed to run their own prisons and mines (same thing when it comes to Hammers).
The Mages are the reclusive ones, they just barged in the City outskirts, paid the lords lots of gold and built a tower. No one knows what they are up to.

The Hammers appear to have serious influence over the Barony and the city authorities, and appear to essentially be for all intents and purposes the state faith in the City. They have their own infrastructure and agenda that is significant in all three games. Metaphysically, the Hammers are basically a force against entropy as embodied by the pagans.

As the pagans say:
>The world as I once knew it was a place of magic - full of mystery and inhabited by creatures of glamour and terror. The men who lived there lit their bonfires and wondered at what crept and lurked in the darkness outside their weak circles of light. All their dreams, their aspirations and dreads, come from that darkness.

>Now, as the forces of "progress" cover the meadows in brick and cobblestone, as they replace the majestic loft of tree with the blocky ponderousness of building, they also light the world in their electric, actinic glare. With the lighting of the shadows, man loses his ability to fear, and to dream.

>The night, once the font of the unknown, becomes only the lack of the sun. I have conceived of a plan to revive the darkness, to bring a resurrection of the ability to fear and dream. And, once my Dark Project™ is realized, they shall know again to fear and love their Lord.

what excellent stealth mechanics? i haven't played it in years, but i remember that i hardly had to worry about the surface noise unlike in the trilogy, and that there was this fancy slide which allowed garrett to completely bypass enemies. the stealth felt very casual.

The atmosphere and sense of place in Thief 1 especially is incomparable. I think the somewhat basic graphics add to the impression because it makes the world mentally digestible... you can't memorize the layout of a modern AAA level, there's just too much fucking detail. But you can memorize the polygonal simplicity of a Thief level and actually mentally map out the game space.

Because of the simplistic graphics, the sound carries so much more weight. Audio design alone, nothing comes close to the sounds of Thief. Using dark ambient music that blends into the level ambience is so cool and very cinematic.

The simple graphics also make the game world incredibly readible... you can literally find loot by looking around the game world instead of looking for HUD icons.

>Mages Towers
The idea is cool, the implementation is bad. Like Thieves Guild, it'd make a solid amateur FM, but it's not up to par for the real game. Too many badly composed featureless corridors and boring gimmick sections. The scale is also messed up and distances are too large, making stealth too easy except in parts like the grate-filled fire section, which was just tedious. The mages are also inept pussies in gameplay which is at odds with their (cool) lore and voicework.
Like gold in general it had cool ideas but was cut for a reason.
