They're outsourced to a different company, and they've been using mostly the same meshes since the 3DS days (they were hilariously high polycount for the handheld at the time). Some specific Pokemon have received touch-ups in more recent games in either new meshes or texture work. I haven't looked at A-Z that much myself to assess how much effort went into making the mons fit the aesthetic in that game.

If you buy it on cartridge, you're stuck with the Switch 1 version. Switch 1 and 2 carts are different enough technologically with S2 games having far greater read speeds and shit.
If you buy it digital, you can then later double dip with an additional 10 bucks or so to upgrade it to the Switch 2 version. So you ARE getting charged extra, but not by a full game's price.

I beat Digimon Story Time Stranger two times, I loved it, had a lot of fun, way better than Cyber Sleuth which I had to force myself to beat because it got super repetitive, I didn't had that problem with TS, loved the Digimon characters, liked the story a lot, in general I had a good time and I recommend it.

They make you choose one of three options at the beginning of the game but you can just ignore him and get other digimons, you have a team of 3 Digimons + another 3 Digimons in case those first 3 lose.
However, you can store like 999 Digimons on the box and in fights, every single digimon gets experience, so all of them are leveling up.
In any case, I turned my Gomamon into a Gizamon and then into a Ranamon and kept it as my main partner, so in little cinematics of fights starting she was always there with me, but that's about it.

But I get it, I miss the Digimon World 1 vibes of just having one digimon, raising it, taking care of it, it's just you two against the world, still in the new game you can pretty much have any digimon as your partner, you can raise their stats to 9999 and make it viable, Ranamon is just in the level of a champion Digimon, however I had her in my team and was very useful when I finish the game in Mega+, the max difficulty the game has.
