2+notr is the manliest game because if you enjoy the ridiculous rebalance and difficulty, you're either someone who knows every exploit, or a masochist

but I'm glad people still discover and enjoy Gothic in 2025. i honestly think it's among the best pieces of eurojank to ever happen, and few games since then managed to create an equally good illusion of a world that lives on while you're merely a part of it

G2 was kinda on easy side, and players complained, so NotR rebalanced it way too far down. If you won't take full advantage of NotR content, your character might end up underdeveloped, regenerating dragons are really, really tricky to kill in conventional ways unless you know what to do (dragon snapper scroll, demon summons), seekers went from being a joke to something you genuinely want to avoid until you're ready. I prefer NotR rebalance because I know the game well enough, but I'd be concerned for the sanity of anyone who decides to play G2NotR as their first Gothic.

They basically turned the game into something that only a series' veteran can play without getting annoyed.

It is, but people are severely overestimating the difficulty of NotR. If I could beat it as a 7 year old kid, then anyone can beat it.
There's a lot of metagaming you can do in that game, but if you don't, there are powerful scrolls that can bail you out of most of the actually difficult fights.

The mod does have a few cool moments and I could create a gallery of impressive looking screenshots that make it look appealing.
BUT
These moments are so few and far between in an ultra marathon of a mod it really was not worth it. My final save time was 220 hours, I didn't use union or any of these "QOL" plugins, just DX11.
The long story short of odyssey is that if you attempt to remake gothic 3 in gothic 2 engine you still end up with a bad game.

There's nothing to disparage, the game spoke for itself.
Quests were mostly mmo-esque braindead dogshit and the world was static with the populace replacement being the only variable should you choose to slay the orcs in whatever city they're in. At least 1 and 2 kept things fresh via chapter updates, it made it seem like things were actually developing and the world changing.
3 had potential and needed more time, patches might've fixed the bugs, glitches, balance and optimization but the core of the game will forever remain flawed. It's literally cyberpunk 2077 of gothic games, wide and very shallow. SAD!

Kinda funny reading these threads knowing i beat both Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 when i was in 11th grade, which was roughly in 2004. I only played Gothic 2 for at least 1 year and i had around 40 saves for each playthrough that i did. So yeah, i finished it more than 40 times. I played Gothic 1 less since it was shorter and smaller, maybe 15 times. I also played Gothic 1 after playing Gothic 2 since that's how i managed to procure them from pirates who had internet (i didn't). Also i fucking loved NOTR. Such was life in rural Romania.

I think it was meant to look better and take full screen but I couldn't get that to work. Anytime I messed with the scale option in the .ini file it instead broke all other UI elements. Same anon, same. I used to replay G1/G2 through every christmas period as kind of my little personal yearly tradition, it's magical, few games respect your autism as much as Gothic does.

The closest thing to Gothic I've found through years was recent KCD, but it's a bit too slow and too grand to be a direct replacement. Great game regardless, it's just that it still doesn't quite nail it.

>Was anything even a threat at that point?
Yeah sure, enemies on legendary difficulty have ludicrously inflated stats endgame they easily have over 1000 strength and come in large packs. That said legendary difficulty has retarded balance curve, for majority of the game enemies have so much armor you deal 5 damage to them while they kill you in 1-2 hits. On top of that all enemies have DEX = STR and they get to have like 250% skill in every weapon which means they will snipe the living shit out of you if they have a ranged weapon and a lot of them do.
I didn't feel powerful in this mod until like late chapter 5 which is an absurdly long time and you never feel unkillable, you constantly have to use boosters like black ore or control spells like fear, ice block, ice wave. Near the end of chapter 6 you get rain of fire rune but that lasts for maybe last 5% of the game, only then you can start ignoring combat and feeling like a walking god otherwise the game's pure pain.
Anonymous No.723557875 [Report]
>>723545290
I'm still annoyed that trainers become more expensive not based on how many times you've learned from them, but how many total skill points your character has at that moment.
So if you, for example, use a permanent potion or something else that improves your stats too early - congrats! You've wasted it! And if you forget to unequip your stat boosting gear before learning, you're wasting points, too.

I feel like neither is difficult past chapter 4 and NOTR is definitely harder than vanilla at the start.
You can minmax yourself into being able to wield the Orc Slayer in vanilla as early as chapter 2. I don't remember if there're enough points to raise your one-handed skill to "Master" though but I think it's also possible iirc.
So you can just do that and farm tons of exp in the Valley of Mines by pulling strong enemies one by one. Orc warriors along with some other enemies can be sidestepped, making it possible to slay most of the enemies in the Valley without spending much of your healing items.

Yeah legendary mode is retarded and if I knew any better I wouldn't go any higher than daring because that allows you to learn the weapon master and sniper perks which are not allowed on hard or legendary.
My primary motivation for even playing odyssey in the first place was practice for Archolos 2.0 hard mode so I locked in difficulty as high as it goes, and that did make me a better player but it was totally not worth it.

Neither is really hard once you play it for Xth time, but if youre going in blind, you likely wont find out about orc farming strategies due to the poor ai. And chapter 1-2 offers much less resources than notr, while enemies remain equally strong. Only after seekers appear, you can feel the difficulty spike in notr.

Archolos is much more fair and balanced.
Biggest part being that the game remembers whether you learned attributes or got them through potions or something similar. So you can just chug everything you can your hands on. Makes exploration and side questing more rewarding.

Drova markets itself by including a lot of what make Gothic iconic but it fails in feeling like it.
It feels incredibly tame, trying to appease current politics while waving the "we're gothic!!!" banner.

1h melee is pretty much the optimal way to go if you know the mechanics, get to at least fighter level of 1h skill and abuse the i-frames of backstep and you can beat anything 1v1.
How do you fight 1v many? Either get more stats, use ranged/magic to reduce fight to 1v1, glitch enemies on terrain to split them up or get really good at the game then you can fight 2 or 3 enemies at the same time, but more than 3 you will need some sort of advantage of stats/magic/range etc.

In your timestamp he specifically states that his complaints about the balance are towards the abundance of bonuses you can get your hands on in the early game, making you much stronger than the game requires you to be for these chapters.

The increasing LP mechanic of NotR would not be such a big deal if NotR was also abundant in things you can find and use to power yourself up. But it's not the case.
Aside from maybe a handful of potions that give you +3 stats each or stone tablets that give you +2% on weapon arts (for which you need to learn the language first), it's not going to break your power levels.
If you lift the LP restriction, you still won't be a powerhouse demigod towards chapter 3. In Archolos on the other hand, you will.

NTA, but yeah. Beyond the awful grinding and broken balance, the devs added a bunch of retarded shit to the game, like the sect camp just below Xardas' tower that don't believe in Sleeper anymore but apparently still talk about his grace. It turned out that they ripped a bunch of assets from other mods and just slapped them onto their project with little rhyme or reason. I played it last year, and it was pretty buggy and obtuse from what I remember, you had to dive into forums to figure out how to progress in certain sections and maximise your levelling due to inflated enemy stats. If the game broke (this happened often) you had to use Marvin, but the devs hate you using it and basically broke it long ago.
Best way to play is on Normal/Hard difficulty, going beyond unlocks more content but adds so much time-wasting retardation that you shouldn't bother.

I also liked getting lost in the undead woods and getting one shotted by an armored skeleton, or seeing the wight that spawns in the little poison swamp at night. I wanted more of that with a few setpieces and quests for 2, but sadly, that wasn't what most of the game was.

But I found the entries sightValue and modelDetail, but increasing them doesn't change anything from the inital problem. I see fucking far on the sides, but looking at something directly in the distance, covers it in fog.
I tired disabling it by setting zFog to 1 but that just removes the fog while keeping the limited rendering.
What I want is when I look at the waterfall in the distance I don't see it, I look to the side of it and I see the entire mountain range. I just want to have the same view distance in all directions.
Unless it's really not possible, then I guess I'll have to do with what the game gives me.
